I just noticed tonight that there are roughly twice as many shown to have entered my Cafe post as shown to have actually played the Soundcloud track.(shown in the SC widget) This has me wondering how KVR forums count thread entries.

Maybe it is also counting the e-mail notification returns of those who wrote replies in the post? When a new reply is posted, all the others come back in to read the new reply. Could this account for the discrepancy? If this is true, nubers could get pretty big fast...i`ll have to look into this further.

Viewing a post doesnt mean you have listened to a track.

I can`t imagine so many people going into a music post and not starting to listen.

Obviously they do.

I found that the SC widget doesn`t seem to increment unless the tune plays through and resets. I clicked ahead to near tune ending, let it end and reset...but it did not increment. This explains it. :o

I have to agree with Kriminal here. My last post has had 124 views and SC reports only 43 plays. I've also noticed when I play other peoples tracks that the counter increments immediately, regardless of whether I listen to the end or not.
Maybe the blurb in the posts puts people off from listening? Who knows. I'm happy for the ones that did listen. The others don't know what they're missing!

Many hits are coming from search engines spiders indexing KVR. Spiders don't listen to music. :)

The song doesnt play when you visit kvr, you have to press play...

I don`t see any indication of that at all. I just played a track half way through clicked the 'back to the cafe' link, went back in to the thread and the SC widget did not increment.

I assume your talking about entering the thread incrementing the visited count. Can`t see searches/whatnot hitting cafe tune threads...maybe i`m missing something?
EDIT - wait, do they just index into a database waiting for someone to search? Does the indexing actually look like the thread has been visited?

A significant portion (about 20%) of the visits to xhip.net don't result in downloads. A significant portion of that is explained away by various web crawlers and scripts. This is pretty obvious when the access comes from amazon aws ("cloud computing") or similar.

The remaining portion though... I guess it must be at least 5% to 10%. These could be people checking for news, coming back to read some portion they hadn't read before "hey, is there a manual for this @$^@ing thing?" (no, sorry! :)) or just people who clicked and decided they weren't interested "whoa the GUI looks terrible, I'm outta here!", "on second thought I probably don't need a 1001th freeware plugin to write the next hit track."

They might have been searching for porn and the "xxx-xated xynthesizer" attracted them to the page where they found themselves very disappointed (this happens quite often.)

Anyway the point is while you can try to fuss with it a bit to improve your views/sales ratio there is only so much you can do. No matter what somebody will view the thread/page/whatever without ever wanting what is on it.

Thanks for that aciddose.:) Interesting.
I`m not entrepreneurially interested in my tunage`s visit to listen ratio, but since I noticed it today, I though it was worth looking into.
My tune was 10 mins long, a long time to hold someones interest. Seeing a 2:1 ratio is actually not that bad! (2 visits) But I know now that SC needs a full way through listen before it shows the listen. Would be nice to have both data...a figure for a start and one for full play. The ratio of visits by SC widget plays could show that...if it were actually realistic. I could rate my longish tunes success by comparing the length by the visit/listen ratio and get a number representing the tune quality.
Maybe i`m over thinking this?

It seems realistic that a website gets erroneous hits, but you really are suggesting the same or similar ratio could be true for a forum thread?

They do provide better statistics if you're a paying customer. I'm not one myself so I can't verify for you that they provide partial listens but I would be absolutely amazed if they didn't.

Yes a forum thread could have a ratio... It definitely wouldn't be the same ratio as the ratio is entirely dependent upon content and the aims of the viewer.

For example someone hearing about Xhip from a friend then searching google and coming to the page, I have 100% view/download ratio. Of course, because such a person definitely wants to download the plugin.

Of google searches for "xxx hardcore" however the ratio is n/zero :)

I can just imagine... "Oh wow, I sort of had my hands full but after seeing this amazing free plugin I'm going to drop everything and download it to make some excellent music!"

BTW: when I viewed some of your tracks I noticed the length was >5 minutes. You might want to post smaller clips from those tracks and upload "long play" versions that people can find themselves.

If you trim the tracks down to 2 1/2 minutes or so, "radio edit" style I'd bet you'll get a lot more plays as well as play-throughs. I did skip through the track to see if I would be interested (to be honest, I wasn't really :)) but I don't really want to listen to 8 minutes of who knows what atm.

So that sort of thing could definitely lead to a ratio. "Whoa, eight minutes is more time than I have, I need to catch the bus in five!"

Search engines will periodically visit every page on KVR including Music Cafe threads. These search engine visits inflate the thread view count.
