under the favorites area(left side of broswer) right click and create new collection. Once that collection is created you can right click it and set it as target collection. Then when you are browsing and you favorite something it gets added to the current target. Would be nice to just be able to drag stuff into that collection folder though. It is a tiny bit confusing but once you get the hang of it its fine. Also you can do custom collections under each tab(devices presets etc)
+1 on the drag and drop. ATM you need to switch the target collection all the time if you for instance are trying to sort larger lists of presets into different collections. Could also be a right-click menu in the main list: "Put into collection..." and a Submenu with all collections.

It also needs some getting used to that only what's contained in the current target collection is showing it's fav-stars lightened up in the main list, especially since the highlighting of the current collection is a bit on the subtle side. It's okay after you groked the system, but I don't find it self-explanatory.

Tom

While we're at it - do you think there's a chance this whole new browser thing may get a major overhaul or is everybody happy with it?

I hate to be "that guy" but personally i don't like it at all, it just doesn't seem to fit the Bitwig-workflow in any way. I actually loved the way the little popup-browser worked in pre-1.2 versions - maybe add some customisation, like choosing 20 (or whatever) devices to appear on the first screen and after you click the "..." symbol on the bottom, you'll get to see all 70 (or whatever) of your favourites. For preset managing or looking for samples, the new browser is okay but could look a lot less ugly as far as i'm concerned.

For example, if i'm browsing for drum machine presets, why do i have to look at all this clutter and not just the important stuff like Category, Creator, Tags and Presets:

So instead of this:
Browser.png
Why not this:
Browser 2.png
Of course i'm not a designer myself and this mockup looks ugly as hell (plus it might loose some core functionality i'm not thinking of right now)...

Something i really appreciate in Bitwig is the nice GUI (which has become even prettier in 1.2 with the new font and everything) - and the cluttered browser kind of doesn't fit in IMHO.

EDIT: What would actually be really cool is the ability to customize the browser: Like not show certain parts of it that you won't need or use most of the time (in my case preset location, category, creator, tags, device type or file type). All of that per tab (Devices, Presets, Multisamples, Samples and Music).

So, is the popup browser still a work in progress?

Considering the actual API(controller) for the Browser is totally configurable IE what columns you observe and such, I am betting that in the future this browser could easily have collapsible columns, configurable columns.

I find it hard to go back to the old "+" menu already, especially since it hardly showed what I needed right away... :-)

Still I would really enjoy a customizable pop-up-browser that is less visually busy.
But it should be customizable on the fly, not in preferences, so that you can quickly open a column you usually don't use when you need it.
Could be as simple as a right-click-menu where you select what you want to see, or a row of icons like in other areas of BWS (may be harder though to iconize these clearly :-) ). Individual columns could have a close "x" to hide them quickly...
Could also be cool to have two browsers, the full one and a customized, reduced one. The customized one opens by default when clicking on a + and the full one opens on shift-click or something alike.

I think the system is set up so that you're not limited by devices. For example you might want to swap in a battery preset or something. You know you might have a synth lead part and lots of vst synths as well as polysynth and fm4 on your system so you would have the freedom to look through all of that.

Hiding columns and stuff does seem like a good direction for them to go into though, since there are some sections in there that I wouldn't use most of the time.

Question: What's the point of having a category column and tags? Can't just having tags do the job of both?

Hi guys,

i got an Steinberg UR22 and it does some cracks without having x-runs on linux. The same happens with version 1.1.10 of Bitwig, could other UR22 Users confirm or deny it ?

In 1.2 i think there are just some more cracks than in 1.1.10..... just my experience....

Maybe some audio driver stuff or sth. like that ?
(It´s just a bit nasty, cause i don´t know if i have serious cracks right know, which is not what i want inside a mix, or just the interface driving me crazy... )

thanks

*edit*
i just checked my Scarlett 18i20, works like charme, so it´s not Bitwigs fault... but due to the fact that i like to use the UR22 for live performance(cause of it´s size), is there a solution to use it without having cracks every 10 or 15 seconds ?

I am guessing Bitwig and their 3rd party contributors use these as "go to" tagging that always exist. You cannot add new categories so these are like a super set of the tagging system where all device, sound contributors have a common system for categorizing and not trying to match everybody else's tagging system.

It may be extra but I think it's a good idea since Bitwig has a native package installer that I am sure will be exposed to users at some point down the road.

You should check that the buffer settings in Bitwig compared to your audio interface are the same. If they are different it may cause crackles.

You can also check for jitters in the DSP performance graph, it should be in single digits. Again, you can adjust the buffer size, to get the lowest jitter value.

Hmm, I suppose that would make things easier, but maybe you could get the same effect simply enough by making the categories into default tags or default tag suggestions or something. Just seems like reducing it to tags would be a more straightforward system.

One weird thing about using categories is that a category is supposed to be an exclusive thing but there are lots of overlaps with the Bitwig categories, eg. piano-keyboard-synth, bass-synth, lead-synth, pad-synth, drums-kick, and so on.

Besides being illogical it interferes with the functionality of the browser, to be able to view and search all your sounds easily. You may choose piano and miss out on a piano synth sound because you filed that under synth. You don't have that problem with tags. I think maybe the idea of categories should be dropped.
