Why would their installers scan any folder on my computer at all? That's intrusive and it assumes I'm a thieving moron until proved otherwise NO?chk071 wrote:Why would it scan for other developer's cracked software? That doesn't make sense at all.

So every copy protected software generally assumes you are a thief?
Was just a matter of time until another Tone2 thread goes down the copy protection discussion alley BTW.

And why wouldn't it ? If a pathologically paranoid developer uses intrusive C/P even in their freeware people should know.chk071 wrote: Was just a matter of time until another Tone2 thread goes down the copy protection discussion alley BTW.
I don't trust Markus or his software one bit. Simple fact, sorry if it rocks anyone's boat.
Oh and I can't forget the disclaimer that is needed every time the Tone 2 invasionware topic comes up.......
*Disclaimer* I have never nor will never use warez, cracks, or any form of pirated software. I do not condone the theft of intellectual property in any way shape or form.............

I wish more synths (free or otherwise) would have Firebird's selection of filters and effects. That part of it is really impressive if you ask me. It's a fun synth, but it just doesn't offer me enough complexity in architecture to hold my attention for long.

Yeah but simplicity works - if you buy sport car you take it because of the engine not the seatsmridlen wrote:I wish more synths (free or otherwise) would have Firebird's selection of filters and effects. Yep, same here, plus I always found the architecture a bit weird.mridlen wrote:I wish more synths (free or otherwise) would have Firebird's selection of filters and effects. What exactly does Tone 2's copy protection do and how does it work? I really don't pay attention to those things because they don't bother me. I own 2 Tone 2 synths and have no problems with them or any of the synths I own as far as C/P goes.

It's not the C/P but the fact that Firebird scans your VST folder looking for keyfiles that were purchased with stolen credit cards and deletes them. I don't know if other Tone 2 plugins do that and don't really care since I won't even download a Tone 2 demo installer anymore......wagtunes wrote:What exactly does Tone 2's copy protection do and how does it work? Like I said I don't use illegal software so it's not a problem in that respect but a freeware installer that can delete things from your computer (how do we know what else it's doing ?) is not to be trusted in my opinion.
It's Markus' pathological paranoia that has put Tone 2 on my "No Try, No Buy" list......I'm certain others will disagree and I'm even more certain that I don't care.
There was a reason Tone 2 released Firebird as freeware.......I believe someone called it a "honeypot".
Oh and in response to the inevitable "stop picking on Tone 2" posts........UHE has one of the best C/P methods in the business.......ever wonder why their products don't generate the same comments as Tone 2 products do ?

How the hell does it know if something was purchased with a stolen credit card? Ask Ingo..........wagtunes wrote: How the hell does it know if something was purchased with a stolen credit card? WTF?
Ingonator wrote: The Tone2 installers indeed do scan the installation folder (e.g. your vstplugins folder) for existing Tone2 key files and deletes them if they are illegal. this is no secret (it was also mentioned by Bastiaan from Tone2 at KVR in the past...) and this does NOT require an internet connection (a bunch of known illegal key files which are checked for seem to be included with the installers).

From the now locked Firebird set free thread in 2013:
"It deactivates illegal keyfiles which have been purchased with stolen credit cards".

Do you own stock in Tone 2 ? Why do you care ? Defending a developer who uses invasionware ?Numanoid wrote:Yeahchk071 wrote:Was just a matter of time until another Tone2 thread goes down the copy protection discussion alley BTW.
Like I said ever wonder why threads from other developers don't go this way ? Maybe because they don't use the same dubious methods ?
In case you missed it.........
