Sort of did that with the free Live 9.5 update that introduced a lot of new features, to keep Live users happy and not jumping ship

Yeah, 9.5 was cool, it got me interested in Live again. But it didn't really touch Bitwig's flagship features that make it such an interesting alternative to Live. Stuff like layered midi editing, track midi editing, easy modulation system, plug in crash protection, more view flexibility, arrange view tweaks, clip launcher in the arrange. The stuff that makes Bitwig look fuller/more balanced/advanced as opposed to Live being a one trick pony dedicated to the whole session view thing. If I were Ableton I would want to cover some of that.

My guess is that Live 10 will arrive in late 2016

Post

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far on this! I think the responses, while I understand are opinion on not insider info, indicate that it will be quite some time until Live 10 is released. I will keep an eye out for a good license transfer option and hope for the best.

Does anyone have an idea when Ableton's next sale typical occurs? And also, what it typically entails (% off, etc)? I haven't been tracking this long enough to have any idea.

Wow, almost seems like you are more interested in pushing Bitwig features, rather than predict Live 10 release date :D

So is Bitwig like Pepsi to Live/Cola or visa versa, the choice of a new generation?

Wikipedia has a really good overview of release dates:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ableton_Live

It would be a good event for Ableton to release Live 10 on October 30th this year, as that is the 15th birthday of Live

Well I own and use Bitwig, fwiw. By pushing Bitwig features you mean I'm trying to sell Bitwig to the OP? No, I just think that Bitwig implemented some very good ideas and seem to have made themselves into serious competitors to Ableton, and I can't imagine that that wouldn't factor in to Ableton's plans. They were the only daw of that type before, now they are not. Those were pretty much all requests for Live, pretty natural areas for Live to expand to, Bitwig just beat them to it. So now they can either implement some of that stuff or sit around and let Bitwig grow. A lot of people think of Live as a one trick pony, something that you might mess around and start ideas in but might not be great for finishing stuff or working on more normal, linear projects in. Those features help Bitwig avoid that. If Bitwig kept going as it is and ableton stayed the same, then I'd say yes, Bitwig would be the choice of a new generation, but thats what Ableton wants to avoid.

I think that is an interesting bet. I also could predict a sale during that period of time.

However, it appears to me that Ableton has been pretty smart with their releases and version numbers. Honestly, I expected 9.5 to be 10 given all the changes...the overhaul to Simpler being high on that list along with the release and connectivity of Push 2. But given that the core has not dramatically changed, I can see no good reason for another version anytime soon. The technology in Ableton Live is current. And given what I have read in this community, a mere facelift would not precipitate a version number paid update (which I agree with). This is not to say that it is not already being tested and gearing up for that time period...I just don't know what they could add to make it a paid number upgrade (which they charge for every major version number). (Gosh I want to hijack this thread and go off on Cubase about this...but I digress).

If you want to make music, I see Ableton Live almost daily in the Marketplace. It is just about sorting through it. Why delay creativity?

There's also the potential for traditional, linear DAWs encroaching in on this territory. I posted this today on another site:

"...look what Apple's doing with GB for the iPad. It's essentially a well implemented Session View, and for certain genres of music this aspect certainly speaks to creativity (as well as live performance in Mainstage.) I wouldn't be surprised if we see such functionality in a future Logic release, similar to how they released Alchemy in GB first.

The functionality is similar; you can trigger rows (scenes) and creatively mix / transfer over to Arrangement View and/or you can trigger different scenes during live performance. The same applies to GB on the iPad."

I can totally see them doing this.

I'd just post a WTB: Live 9 Suite thread at KVR , and/or Ableton forums . Bitwig is cool too maybe give it a demo .

Thanks, I appreciate the lead. I visit that forum in my search as well, although not as frequently as this one. Unfortunately, the problem that i have seen there (and everywhere to some extent) is that many of the sellers (including the 3-4 that have it up for offer now) have absolutely not history in the forum. Most of them have 1-2 posts and joined either the same day or very recently. Since I would have to pay them first, I need a little something to help prove they are legit, because my understanding is that even if i use the non-gift option in Paypal, i could still get screwed. For instance, if i send the money and they never transfer the license, wouldn't I just lose that money with no recourse? If I am wrong about this please let me know. That's why I kicked myself when i missed the offer here for 300 Euro from a reputable member with a lot of forum posts.
