You also can put some stones in a grinder.... but since he is asking for a synth...layzer wrote:yawn... yeah i can do this with onepingonly and amplitube.liv wrote:Something like this?

right. don't bother with synths that don't have built in effects. don't own a grand piano without built in effects or a saxaphone or a kazoo without built in effects!!! DON'T DO IT!Cinebient wrote:You also can put some stones in a grinder.... but since he is asking for a synth...layzer wrote:yawn... yeah i can do this with onepingonly and amplitube.liv wrote:Something like this?

When I saw this thread, my first thought was SSP or Enzyme. So dirty and so much fun!Gamma-UT wrote:Humanoid's Scanned Synth Pro or Enzyme. It's a tough job trying to get sounds out of either of them that aren't grindy. (http://www.humanoidsoundsystems.com)

Well, acoustic instruments comes already with FX like a reverb. There is nothing more dry than a synth without FX.layzer wrote:right. don't bother with synths that don't have built in effects. don't own a grand piano without built in effects or a saxaphone or a kazoo without built in effects!!! Back to topic...
Cableguys Curve 2 is also nice.
Or Skanner (a Reaktor powered synth).

Cyclop is great but it's monophonic right?
There are not few synths that can do dirty, dark and grindy (whatever rhythmic noise). For free I suggest Carbon 2 and Dexed.
For commercial: Reaktor, Serum, Bazille, ACE ...etc.
Effect: Relectro comes to mind.

Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

I've been playing with the Cyclop demo. Absolutely getting this. On the fun meter, this shoots right up to the top of my synth list. Yeah, it's very niche specific and I'm certainly not making any pads with it, but to just knock around and have fun with, there is nothing I've yet to find that tops this.
My first purchase of 2016.

PolyKB has not been mentioned yet...DEFINITELY capable of some nastier stuff...
too bad Darkware and Novuzeit are no longer out there...
InsertPiz Mr Alias is probably my fave mentioned on this thread so far... though Cyclop is definitely a fun one ;]

klc wavestation can sound complex AND nasty. it has a built in distortion effect along with its wavesequencing can create crazy sounds. not many people use that effect in their WS patches as it is used mostly as a gentle moving pads machine.

I can't get past the dubstep demos on the website. Wub wub blah blah etc. It's probably a terribly fun synth though, and I'm just telling myself this because I bought Serum recently and a Microbrute not long before that and I want an Atmegatron and Volca FM and I have to stop the GAS somewhere.wagtunes wrote:I've been playing with the Cyclop demo. Speaking of which, has anyone mentioned Serum? Because it can be spectacularly nasty.
Or Microbrute for that matter. Sure it's an analog monosynth and can't do some of the stuff mentioned here, but it actually can get pretty damned grindy. That "Brute Factor" knob is well named.

I genuinely think that ABSYNTH is the darkest, scariest synth I own, both in terms of the preset content and what you can do with it. I make old-school industrial music (professionally, even!) and Absynth is my favorite for those leads and sequences that sound raw and terrifying.
An no, I'm not just talking about the millions of "evolving pads and soundscapes" for which the synth is most commonly spoken of. Those are fine, and yeah they are spooky, but what I'm saying is that Absynth can make some absolutely nasty, growling leads, basses, sequences, etc.
The WAVESHAPERS available for each of the 3 oscs and the master channel are a huge part of this, but also the granular elements can go a long way, PLUS the aetherizer effect, and finally layering simple FM oscs alongside the rest can really start to create some nasty scary sounds.
so, yeah, ABSYNTH all the way.

Probably the most vicious synth I've heard (on it's own) is Rob Papen's RAW. I sold it recently, as I found it quite limited and samey sounding, but that's just me...
Others that have already been mentioned Bazille, Cyclops, Diversion, are all very good. I'd add Zebra (the 11 Osc setting!!
) and Toxic Biohazard in there too.
The Virus is very gnarly, because it has really nice distortion FX (but that's hardware obviously).
I generally prefer heavy music and most of the best producers I know of always use a heap of good quality FX to get their overall finished sound. Some use external distortion units (Old Mackie desks, Guitar pedals, Sherman Filterbank, etc.). Other work in the box and just use good quality vsts.
Of course, some of these guys have been at it for twenty years - so they know their stuff.
As OP pointed out most FX that come with synths are not the greatest (some better than others). Although, I think Omni has an exceptional array.
So to answer your first question - Post processing is king (imo).
