But still, you could easily tell that there is a bass sound where there's supposed to be a drum... maybe it's just an issue with how certain DAWs handle missing plugins? Rather than just bypassing them, they mute the sound and you're stuck digging through 100 tracks of a project to figure out how to make something make noise somewhere?

Not sure what the confusion is. If we only have access to free plugins, it's a lot easier to check projects for abuse. If someone is using all using all kinds of commercial plugs, it's quite a bit harder.

Right, but one of the tenets of the contest is that the use of plugins of any type don't alter the sound beyond recognition... so missing eq should maybe muddy up the mix a lot, but not change the overall character of the track, no?

Instead of handing me that project, they swap out the samples for some clever tracks with commercial plugs, and drum presets / layering, whatever. I don't have all these plugins, so couldn't verify.

If they used free plugins, it would be fairly easy to get the plugins, and verify that the sound matches up.

I have to agree. Commercial plugs, from a verification standpoint, just won't work for this contest.

Yeah they could cause trouble with free stuff, but of course it's just another layer of ease with commercial plugs. Thankfully we haven't had too many fly by nighters who cheat to get the prize, though there have been some attempts.

This time around, I only gave one track 5 points, and a decent amount of ones I thought were very, very good that I gave 4 points.

The reason I only gave one of the tracks 5 points is I thought it was the best track this time around, and I should try and just pick the overall winner and be done with it.

I never do that great myself, as I think the highest I ever got was 25th place with a track I thought would do better (Hive OSC) but it is still fun to enter the OSC. Also, I learn something new each time.

Some of the guys on here are definitely masters of the craft for sure.

Where can I find the list of your plugs? Remember, I'm on 64 bit Windows.

Here. They are all cross-platform, of course I use a bunch of the stock Bitwig plugs just because I'm used to them. But between your DAW plugs, Freeverb 3, Limiter 6, and the TDR plugs, you should be able to get a decent mix. It *does* suck a but compared to use the FabFilter stuff. Ok, a lot bit... anyway, the trick is to find a few plugs that do the job and get good with them.

I wish I could get better free FX for those synths that have none at all, like TAL. I hate all my free reverbs. I hate my EQs because they're so hard to work with. I hate my compressors for the same reason. My delays are good. But that's it.

Totally agree. I have a huge workflow suckage not being able to use my FabFilter plugs. I love them. So much. Freeverb 3 is good, I highly recommend it. It does suck just a bit to use but sounds awesome.. but pick the ProG 12 sec reverb, then adjust it down, eventually you get the hang of it. I am sooo close to getting the source code for that one and just making a nice UI for it... Agree about the compressors sorta, just get ALL the TDR plugs, they are awesome, they'll help out the OSC a lot. You can substitute TDR Nova for a MB comp pretty effectively, it takes some getting used to, though. And TDR Kotenlikov is a nice compressor. Hell, even Molot can sound awesome.. but WTF am I looking at with it? hehe. Anyway, you should look at the list of plugs on my tracks, they work pretty well

Actually I like that we have to use freeware, I have a new appreciation for how good some freeware is. The Melda Productions is a good substitute for ProQ, little bit fiddly in comparison but It has some nice features of it's own.
