Are you using a graphic overlay?
No, not an overlay. It will be printed directly on the underside of a plexi panel.

Wait, so the one that donated to has a worse audio engine than the free one ?!
Soshi Studio hasn't provided the full source code for their modifications, but what they did provide looks identical to the orbitfold branch on github with new GUI images. So from what I can tell, yes, it won't sound as good.

Just my 2 cents. Sketchy donate page. Disregard for GPL licensing. I know I certainly won't be using the binary provided by them. Use at your own risk.

So to confirm, is the version contained in the 'Download' button here: https://obxd.wordpress.com/ the bestest/definitive build so far, and this one: https://soshistudio.wordpress.com/ is an older version just with a 'newer' skin ?

EDIT: Wait, no they both are the same one (with a build date of 12th May 2016).... this has got confusing ! Seem to remember the older (apparently better) one had a hyphen in the filename of the .dll

Post

Very confusing for me too. Seems that both sites hosted the latest Soshi Studio version (1.2.1).

Since they have a link called "Donate for more enhancements." Has anyone actually tried to "donated" to get the "enhanced version" yet. Are they different?

If yes, isn't it illegal to make money of GNU license code?
I can't lie to you about your chances, but... you have my sympathies.

Post

Yes I've donated (about a month back), but nope not received any link with enhancements ....

In the message box at the bottom is the following dialogue:
Vinnie Great update and thank you for this !! Love the OB style UI overlay and layout. It’s much more logical in the flow. Also good to see the Donate link !! Question: in the LFO code, I noticed a number of references to sync. Is there any way to get the LFO to sync to host ? Thank you again and awesome update !!

Soshi Studio Not yet. But donation very low for more development. Only two
So I kinda read that as if he's not going to develop it unless he gets more donations - Which seems a little rough as 2Dat had happily been updating it since 2013 and all Soshi Studio seemed to have done so far is nab the source code !

Hope there's some input from any of the folks working here so they can clarify what's goin' dahn !

@ Elevated_being - the idea of free in GNU licensed code refers to the idea that the GNU licensed code isn't owned by a particular entity and can't be locked down or controlled like standard proprietary code. It doesn't violate GNU license to charge money for their code as long as the source code is provided as well.

I haven't checked for differences, but if all he's done is add another gui to the source code then there wouldn't be any difference if anyone else added a gui to the source code package and called it a new release, thus no need to donate anything before any work has been completed. Maybe he should have used kickstarter or something like that?

Post

You can't charge anything for the code because the code is owned by the original author (copyright) and provided under license. You have no right to sub-license the code unless it is sub-licensed only under the same license.

The license allows for you to charge for a service associated with the code such as packaging, delivery, installation, support and so on.

The purpose of donations is to seek support for future development because it is near impossible to recover the development costs after the fact. This is because of the sub-licensed version with additions being released under the same license which is wholly free.

For example he could charge a membership in order to download the binary so long as the source is also provided. After a single person downloaded the modified source however they could compile a new binary and distribute it for free.

It costs quite a bit of money to run a server even with very little bandwidth required. We're talking a few hundred per year minimal and this might include power (electric) bills if running the server non-stop 24/7 year round.

Therefore he could charge something like $5 for access to download the binary + source to cover his expense. He could not charge for the source-code itself however nor could he expect to be reimbursed for his development.

Something like kickstarter might be a good idea, if only to demonstrate there is no support available for such a project and it is entirely a waste of time.

I don't use OBXD myself, but I thought it was sad that there is so much confusion surrounding this open source plug-in. I personally believe in OSS and I didn't like what I have been seeing here, so I forked the original repository on Github.

I cleaned up the repository a bit and added a Projucer file. In theory, anyone should be to load this up in Projucer and build for their platform of choice (assuming the code is portable). I have also provided binaries for 32 and 64 bit windows based on the latest source from 2Dat. These do not include the Soshi Studio changes.

The release is tagged to the commit it was compiled from and I've included details about the configuration used to compile. Hopefully this will give everyone a reliable, known and audit-able source for the OBXD plug-in.

Thanks. :)

Nice, good work. I must admit - Aside from the default init patches being different (the older build which includes the binary Dozius just posted has the filter cutoff halfway down, and the Soshi Studio one has the cutoff fully open) I can't really notice any difference when comparing matching presets. Am I right in thinking there's meant to be some different in the filter with the older one which made it closer to the original hardware ?

Post

Wow, awesome. Thanks for that, Dozius. Not sure if i wasn't already using that version though.

The GUI looks a little different between the two versions:

Yep, i definitely use the upper version. I was just not sure if it's version 1.1, or version 1.0 or something.

Except for the Keep All part and the ordinary synth name font, really like the font in the Soshi version. The numbers though need to be spaced further apart. OSC 1 is better than OSC1
