FinalMix Presets

I agree that it's overpriced; however, I can't help but wonder if anybody's delved into the plug rather than trust the presets which all seem to be standard compression/EQ rather than mastering (as the "Final Mix" moniker would lead us to believe)?

It's got a lot of depth to it.

Well,

Reviving an old thread; however--

I'm going through hell, as I HAD installed and successfully used Final Mix before. Why on earth won't it work now? It's getting frustrating.

I refer to, of course, the preset system. I've tried everything on this thread, and no luck. One problem, though, which rendered one suggestion useless:

I can't seem to change my folder attribute to uncheck "read only"!!!??? It's REALLY pissing me off, not just for the plugin, but because it's such a basic thing that SHOULD be easy and since it's not, it's infuriating.

I clear the "read only" attribute box, click "Apply", and then for good measure, click "OK". Then when I look at the folder's properties again, nothing has changed.

So I use Freeware apps to batch-process, also hoping they'll succeed where Windows itself failed. No luck-- neither program I tried would change the attributes! What the hell??? So now not only am I not sure that changing the attributes could have been the solution I was looking for in FinalMix, but I just can't change my attributes in general at all!

Any insight? Anyone with a tried-and-true method of getting FinalMix to work. If so, posting a beginning-to-end method would be wonderful. Thanks,

Greg

have you tried removing final mix completely from the file system (and sub folders). close T. open T. complete plug rescan. close T. open tracktion folder and make an entirely new folder in plugins folder for final mix with correct subfolder relationship. restart T. complete plug rescan. check if the presets are there.

failing that. uninstall T. delete T folder. reinstall T.

beyond that, can't think of anything.

To be honest, I'm not impressed with the sound of this plugin; it's harsh and it distorts easily. I wouldn't pay for it. I'm hoping some of the presets will show me its hidden qualities. Off I go.
Man,

My experience couldn't be farther from this with Final Mix.

It's a great multi-band dynamics plugin. I've used it to clean up some stereo .wav files that I thought I had mastered pretty well before. The first preset; what's it called , something like "Acuma master to CD" just rocked for these tracks.

If you are getting distortion, then you are asking it to do something it really wasn't designed for.

I wouldn't pay $399 for it, but the multi-band compression in Final Mix does work pretty good and considering there isn't another plugin out there that is 3 band with pre and post eq and a built in peak limiter for this price (free), then I'm not going to complain.

Multi-band dynamics processors are good when you have an uneven level in a certain band of frequencies that you want to smooth out, without compressing other frequency bands at the same time (which is what a non-frequency selective compressor will do - look up 'pumping compressor' on google for a description).

Final Mix works great for this.

Are you using XP? I've since discovered the following as part of Windows help ...

"Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories, and other programs. For example, you can delete, rename, and change a folder with the Read-only attribute by using Windows Explorer. The Read-only and System attributes is only used by Windows Explorer to determine whether the folder is a special folder, such as a system folder that has its view customized by Windows (for example, My Documents, Favorites, Fonts, Downloaded Program Files), or a folder that you customized by using the Customize tab of the folder's Properties dialog box. As a result, Windows Explorer does not allow you to view or change the Read-only or System attributes of folders.

Note In some previous versions of Windows, you can change the Read-only attribute for folders by using the Properties dialog box for the folder, but no versions of Windows permit you to change the System attribute by using Windows Explorer."

So ... it may have been a dead end ... but if you're really keen, the help file also offers a workaround.

Nah, that helps a lot in terms of relieving my feeling of nuttiness.. though I wonder why they even bother allowing you to 'clear' the box, if it's not going to actually do anything. ;)

That means that it's not the 'read only' attribute after all, which also goes a ways in helping me narrow down what the problem IS, then.

Tomorrow I think I'll re-install Tracktion and see how that goes. I know for sure that with my previous install, I had moved FinalMix to my D:\VST Plugins\FinalMix folder and it loaded the presets just fine. Annoying that it's not working as expected.

Well I'm still not convinced, although I'm sure it's all to do with my inability to use a multiband properly. I'm still using the presets and I'm not blown away. I actually found myself going back to using Kjaerhus' Classic compression, perhaps with a bit of multiband eq before and after, followed by their master limiter (what I often used to use). Further, the presets also suggest use within a single track rather than as final compression - I'm talking about the vocal presets mainly here. I've found these rather aggressive on my voc tracks, particularly the higher freq's and haven't been too helpful.

Clearly i need to learn how to tweak around with it myself :help: but I'm aware that getting the most out of a multi band comp isn't going to be learnt in a few hours.

As for the loading / saving preset malarkey - Lunch Money I've given up. Initially it behaved differently each time I loaded it up. Sometimes I could use the scroll arrows, or even simply click on the preset title to get the whole list to appear (very handy). That's now gone (despite re-installations) and I have to go via menu>load FM. Additionally, (and this is REALLY annoying) it has problems remembering presets used in a mix. When closing and reopening a project, the preset used returns to the default one (master to cd) - Actually it doesn't do that - it keeps the settings of the saved preset, but then calls it "master to cd*" the '*' supposedly indicating that you've altered one or more settings. It gets even more complicated if you use fm in more than one track / project. changing settings in fm in one project seems to do the same for all other instances of fm wherever they may be. Again it is unclear whether actual settings are changed, or just the title of the preset. And this is before i start making my own presets.

I think I'll be leaving it alone for a while and make some music...

I have to agree. I've mucked around with it (when it was working relatively well) and I DO think it's a very good plug-in; however, it's not worth the headache to me right now trying to get it to play nice. Grr.
