Is MPC Essentials a DAW? It is to me, and I pretty much like everything about it. I'm tempted to buy MPC hardware just so I can have the full-fledged MPC Software.

Agreed. I use/have used a lot of different DAWs and Sonar is unparalleled in this regard.

Functional? Ableton Live, if you don't use third party plug ins you can avoid opening/closing windows and becomes way less cluttered. of course live isn't the best for mixing and audio editing but for its main intended purpose the GUI is superb.

Worst? Reaper because it lack any core principle guiding it. Then Reason because it is so outdated for today more common resolutions.

AL, FL still miss some kind of mixer view where u can follow your modulations (or can create minimezed device views as is S1), it's missing from Bitwig too where your LFOs (and all the modulation devices) are containers > can work only on those devices which ones have been dropped into them ergo there is no cross track(s) modulation possibility,

if u check Renoise ...

can see the modulation source>targets are highlighted nicely

song structuring also very nice in it

Reaper because of the user base and all the customisation - if you don't like the theme you currently have you can go on the reaper stash and download another one you won't like

I find MuLab relaxing, because all the modular goodies are hidden until needed. Note- this screenshot has custom hi-viz knobs.

That's why I always feel like weirdo when I'm sitting in front of my Reaper with almost standard theme and I like what I see

Sonar here, in two monitors. For those who say its GUI is cluttered, remember that you can customize it pretty much. It does not look that good in a single screen if the screen is too small. I use Ableton Live, too, and while it has improved since you can use two monitors, its implementation is still clunky. I also use Reaper just for instrument practice, because I can import native mp3, I like navigation and I can set up practice sessions that I can control with a couple of hot keys, but I must say that the GUI is horrible no matter what skin you download. Some are more horrible than others, though.

WHAT? I use basically White Tie Imperial or derived, and they all look gorgeous to me

More power to you. I use Rado, I find Imperial somewhat cheesy. I don't think Reaper looks are gorgeous with any skin, sorry.

IMHO way better than new dark Sonar, Cubase, Logic, S1, Tracktion and etc.

No matter which skin you use for Reaper, it will still have the same layout. Which you can tweak too of course. But then, if you need to dress, and tweak something for it to make it look okay, then there's an issue in the first place. The default look has been improved from v3 to v4, yes, but i still don't like it. And it doesn't adress miles long drop down menus, or the ugly plugin windows either. The problem is a fundamental one IMO. If you consider it a problem of course. If you're fine with it, you're fine. Whatever.
