Here's another vote for the DR-008 / Slicy Drummer / Slicy Fillin combo. My drum tracks have improved immeasurably since I went this route.
Another interesting choice is Ruction at: http://www.d-dev.com/ruction.html

Another important issue for a newbie is whether to:
1. Use audio loops
2. Create midi parts using the piano roll that play a VSTi or sampler
3. "Play" the drums using a midi keyboard using a VSTi or sampler
Obviously its an advantage if you know how to do all three.

This is one particular feature I cannot do without and so far Tracktion looks great but Im not big on real time drum programming, I like the whole notation aspect like in Cubase or the drum grid programming like my 505 or my MC 50 mkII...please assist!!!

In Tracktion you can create a midi part, and use it to play drums.
What I tend to do, is play the drums on a midi keyboard real time, and then use the midi editor to make corrections.

I am a newbie too, and I have read this thread with interest. I only have Reaktor Sessions, and have programmed patterns using their drum machines (especially the brilliant new Limelight in EI Vol2). Is there a way of getting the beats from Reaktor into T.
At the moment I just add a Reaktor Drum ensemble as a filter and the rhythm just srarts when I start T. This seems too simplistic, but I have got used to programming beats within Reaktor, and they sound great. I also import audio drum loops too. Is there a way without buying RMIV or Battery.

Yeah,
What happened to the Artistic Recordings page? This one used to be linked direct at the Mackie/Tracktion site.
