But i don't like the current development - technology is developed very fast, music is not.

Do you think that there is a lag involed? That todays technology must be absorbed fully before great creative leaps are made?

People who use samples and stuff in a dull way will hopefully get there payback in that their music will on the whole not sell or be respected.

Makoto released a tune recently that used an Amen 'Golden Girl' featuring MC Conrad. Plenty of other artists are using their own constructed breaks these days so we are in safe hands

I personally get tired of hearing amens all the time but there is the odd time where it feels like the only break that will suit the vibe of the tune.. So I guess it has been become immortalised like the 909 drum machine

No, although the break has very a similar groove.

But listen to his (also great) tunes "Horizons" and "A Couple of Beats" (@ about 3:18 ). Sounds like an amen with heavy effect modification.
But don't misunderstand me, as to me, Bukem's still the most skilled and innovative D&B artist.

I think you shouldn't let a new technology take over the 'bad work' you have to solve during production. This 'bad work' can be very inspring. But we shouldn't go 'back to the roots' and use Lo-Fi samples. Also, if we just stick to old, used things (303/808/909) we can't push things forward (although we all may like their sound).
Music should be a result of the artist's circumstance and his mood, not of the available techniques. I think nowadays innovation can be reached by trying things that are in common considered crap. Generally, try to make as many musical aspects as possible that nobody made before. And don't say 'the next song i'll make is dark techstep'. Move around the borders of opposite music styles.

One thing is to be a musician.
One thing is to be a music lover playing with computers or hardware.

Play with the "amen break" whatever you want, you´ll get the basics.
Play also with the "Funky Drummer", and follow the links you´ll find in this page.
But i recommend that you do the whole process, even sampling it from the plastic.
Even... cut it by hand. It will fine tune your ears.
Then use recycle, to try it.
It´s very productive to work in a "old school" environment, but also you can spend hours on it in another creative way.
You won´t discover anything again as a future post will reveal...

I get to know music by exchanging tapes with classmates.

hey, that's cool! I thought the younger generation got everything from P2P...

when I was a kid none of my friends knew shit about music - except for what I had taught 'em. I had to _buy_ records. If I spent my whole allowance on LPs I could buy one every week. Man, that's a slow way to learn... I used to tape 'em right away and only use the tape. Good to know there are still people out there using tape!

As for sampling it, the entire genre was formed from sampling

yeah, I guess sampling is cool, but I can't help respecting your way of working (making your own beats) a LOT more.

I think there has been a notable drop in the popularity of the amen in jungle these days, especially darkcore. I own every record with Dieselboy's name on it that has been released in the past 2 years, and the amen appears only a few times. Infact, on a 3 peice vinyl set (6 tracks) he released, the amen only appears for 4 measures on 2 occasions for fills.
