Most people seem to be using very noisey hi-hat sounds, so I decided to make an attempt at a basic metallic timbre using ringmod and pulses as I described in an earlier post.

Unfortunately due to the nature of blooo's ringmod and oscillators the result isn't nearly as bright as it would normally be. The missing harmonics actually remove most of the sub-harmonic partials (difference frequencies) which would normally make up most of the dissonant metallic component.

Blooo also can't do negative pulse widths or invert the oscillator waveforms (which would provide the same and more) which is a significant limitation. (Basically what I'm saying here is yes, it is a little difficult but don't let that stop you. It is still possible to get great cymbals!)

I've included the presets in a zip attached to this post.

Here is a demo of the sounds:
http://xhip.net/temp/hihats_blooo.mp3
http://xhip.net/temp/hihats_blooo.flac

It's essential to minimize the noise in such a hi-hat sound. Typically a real cymbal has a "noise-like" component but this isn't the same as white noise. Mixing white noise into a sound can approximate the chaotic partials in a cymbal but can't reproduce them and such noise will tend to drown out the metallic timbre.

Hi everyone ... a last minute change to my track - I have added a percussion break after the solo, and before the refrain (thanks mehum for the suggestion). I have taken the basic percussion backing and added in some extra elements - louder bongos, more crash, extra timbale and toms, so as to get that extra feeling of exuberance by the host of percussionists when they get their "spot" - just go wild, but keep a beat for us please ...

I have also reduced the sustain/decay duty cycle of my 7 steel drum instances - again from comments maybe those tails lasted too long and muddied the mix a little, since there was no reverb on these items, this was the way to reduce that "perceived" reverb!

Also rebalanced the mix (ta mehum) to bring up the backing a bit and pushed the steel drums back a bit.

Please enjoy, (again if you have already had a listen!). .... and if you don't like the new version , please let me know and I can perhaps revert before the final curtain on submissions comes down.

My entry for KVR One Synth Challenge 102: The blooo

I'm like SO DONE with OSC. :P So done I actually sold my MIDI controller/audio interface/VA synth. :scared: Done, except for ultra special months, like Full Bucket synths. :hihi: Thanks for the quick fix, Mr. Bucket, and for the gorgeous reskinning of an ultra usable classic. Also, this excuse to give it a deep dive gave me immense appreciation for the modulation capabilities you've built in to this one: enough for coarse sound sculpting, expressive evolving sounds, and micromodulation, all in one patch. (Note that appreciation does not imply effective application in my track :ud: )

All patches from Init. All notes & automation created 100% in the box (since I sold my midi gear :dog: ).

Naturally, I'm happy to read your introduction...

I've attached a kick I made for you to look at, which is a bit tighter than the boomy kick in your track. This should give you some more room for the rest of your music. Right now your heavy kick really absorbs a whole lot. If you want this kind of length, you should consider making an actual bass that goes with the kick, which could sustain the low pressure. This bass you can then tune properly to the rest and it will all feel a lot stronger!

GReAT first go, though! OSC is a beautiful challenge and I'd be very happy to be the first to give you something to consider and learn from. I've learned a ton from here and love to make that spirit felt to all, who join, too! :phones:
Thanks a lot for the feedback Taron!

I will certainly check your kick out, and do my best to revisit the mixing in this couple of days. I'm sure I have a lot of work to do yet, just got eager to post the track before I would chicken out of it  hehe.

Let's hope I can make it sound better before the deadline

I've just got to say to everyone here that I have heard some great tracks posted. This community is very inspirational. Keep up the good work!

The more it is an honour to me, that my mix has been approved by mehum's nice comment to my track!
It's good to have constructive people like him around that are keen to help others...

Thanks guys! <3
Appreciate it! I know I can come off a bit arrogant at times, especially when I'm in a sour mood :)

Now, if only I could save my own mixes as well... It's often much easier to judge other people's work than your own, which is a big reason why mastering engineers and talent shows are still around. ;)

I'll listen to your changes in my next round of listening! Unfortunately I'm down with a cold now... Ears not working very well...

Yes Peter H, fully agree - so nice to have comments and help. In the end we all need help as our ears are too often "tuned in" to our own way of doing things - so nice to be "enlightened". I just hope the quick re-arrangement and re-balancing of the mix has helped. In my perc solo part I bolstered up the kick with a bit of low tom - just wondered if when the refrain kicks in (no pun intended), the loss of that tom with the kick makes it a bit flat from there on in ... so .... should I keep that tom going in the last section to push the beat harder? There are pros and cons to doing this - just wondered what other people think ... not a lot of time to change it now (although it's not *that* hard to push in an extra line of tom hits!), so I'll see if I get votes for and against and take it from there ...

So far this track is simply rendered directly from the midi - no bouncing to audio - most impressed with the performance and stability of The Blooo (thanks FB!).

Hey mehum, thanks for the feedback on SC! It inspired me to have another look at my track and do a few alterations, mostly just mix, but also the drum transition to the second half. I kept the vocal space free, but dealt with the bass treatment, still keeping it bottom heavy, but modulating the stereo sense. It should feel a bit more "conventional" where it has to, but I couldn't get myself to leave it there, so it modulates wide and narrow, depending on the function of the bass, so to say.
Really nice feedback and just the right kind of push! Thank you, again! :tu:

Inspired by all the update paranoia, the aliens have sent a update version of their track thru deep space radio too. I have immediately uploaded it to soundcloud...They think the new version is a tinny µ better than the previous one...and I can only say yes, it is.

(Sorry mehum, your nice comment on the previous version about the mix is "gone". I haven't subscribed to sc, therefore I have to create new tracks for each upload)
