I realise I'm late to the party, but I’ve just spotted the comment by Urs that the upgrade to Repro-5 will be free! So a quick question please….
I’ve just downloaded the Repro 1 demo and installed the 64 Bit VST3 version to find it seems to be ignoring midi CC on the midi learn page.
A quick look at the reply by Urs to MFXxx’s post explains what is going on and how to work around the problem.
I’ve seen one of the advantages of using the VST 3 format for FX (lower cpu use when idle) – but with the sleepy zZz option available for lower CPU use when Repro-1 is idle – is there any other benefits of using the VST 3 version of Repro-1?

I’ve purchased Repro-1 and I’m now using the 64 bit VST 2 version in Cubase. Midi learn was quick and easy – many thanks for your help.
As I had loaded the VST3 demo version originally, I went in to the plug-in manager to make sure the correct version was called up.
The only VST3 instruments were Steinberg’s own along with the Roland D50 plug-in. The midi-learn in Retrologue responded as expected…so I loaded up the D50, and the PG1000 parameters also responded to midi learn.
I’m not a programmer, so I’ve no idea as to the nuances between VST 2 and 3, but these two examples worked first time in the way I’d expect. Some of the VST3 plugs were showing up as VST 3.52, so I don’t know if that helps or makes any difference…I just thought you should know in case some clever trickery is going on, or something has been changed in the format itself to allow for this.
Really enjoying Repro-1 – many thanks.

They do this by assigning all CCs to some internal placeholder parameter, and then use these to reroute MIDI. We have also done this in our first incarnation of VST3 support, and it was people from Steinberg who advised against it. So in our new VST3-layer we are VST3 conform, when even their own plug-ins are not, or at least designed against their own advice.Treeper wrote:I’m not a programmer, so I’ve no idea as to the nuances between VST 2 and 3, but these two examples worked first time in the way I’d expect. Also, we have financed and proposed an extension to VST3 which would enable MIDI Learn ("show us how you think it should work"). This was received warmly by the people at Steinberg who we then worked with (""thank you"), but dismissed by others later on ("not good"). So it's kind of unclear to us as to whether or not and which way MIDI Learn in VST3 will be implemented by Steinberg.
VST3 was originally designed to be free of MIDI, as MIDI was seen as an outdated standard, and plug-ins needed to be able to embrace a change. That info stems from 2004, when devs at Steinberg laid the concept out to me. But alas, more than a decade later, MIDI is still pretty much the only thing that really *is* a standard. IMHO the resistance of certain forces against its full adoption in VST3 damages its fitness as a widely adopted standard.

Thanks for the explanation Urs...
It sounds like a lot of internal politics at Steinberg...
Let's hope they don't force Cubase users down the VST 3 route before this gets sorted!

Well, I guess they know what they're doing, but for us it's sometimes frustrating to get told one thing here and another thing there.Treeper wrote:Thanks for the explanation Urs...

MIDI ain't going anywhere. Steiny should've reacted by now... They're almost a zombie of a company now...

I just bought Repro-1 with the intent of getting the free upgrade to Repro-5 when it comes out.
I think Repro-1 just becamse my most favorite synth. It has a richness my other 30 or so VSTs so can't touch.
Thanks Urs!

There is something about monosynths. And Repro-1 nails it.

Got Repro-1 recently, here's a short tune made using only it (a little eq here and there). Really looking forward to its polyphonic sibling!

cb8rwh,
Sounds very good! Reminds me a bit of Depeche Mode. I was eager to try the free patches, but I got this message from my iMac and StuffIt Expander:
"The structure of the archive is damaged."
