OK, I will: shire SM58 mic, into a 4 channel professional mixer (guarda 12091eu) then into behringer uca202 usb interface and into my computer usb2 port. The RCA cables are also professional quality. Can you see any weaknesses here?
Thanks
to complement the information already given:
the sm 58 is a solid microphone and if you feel it suits your voice, that's great.
with preamps that are capable of at least 50 db of noisefree! amplification, you should get a good signal into the behringer audiointerface.
gainstaging is crucial here, as already explained above by peter.

i'd also suggest to try the asio4all driver. i guess that is the one behringer is recommending also. they don't have proprietary drivers in most cases, especially with the cheaper interfaces.

if you find it too difficult to get the gainstaging right, i would recommend to invest in a two-channel usb-audiointerface with good preamps and converters, to simplify your setup for voicerecording. this would be an upgrade in soundquality over the behringer unit also. there are models from m-audio, steinberg, presonus, focusrite with good preamps and converters in the lower price-range.
you can still use the mixer in that setup for monitoring or feeding different sources to the interface for recording.

hm, seems new zealand has a little less choice on brands in regard to audiogear and prices are a bit higher.
this is what i found in a quick search:

I haven't been able to find anything on the guarda 12091 interface - does it have any kind of metering or clipping indicators? If it does, speak loudly into the microphone, adjusting the level until it clips slightly (clipping indicator or metering into the red), then turn down just a touch. You should then be getting the "optimum" signal-to-noise ratio on microphone input.

Output from that interface - does it have a line-level output, or just headphone? Line-level and the output set to "unity" gain or "0" on the master gain should be typically optimal; or output level meters again doing the same as above - approaching 0 but not clipping. If a headphone output is all that's available, you'd sort of have to do it by ear - what sounds good without clipping.

Oh, and make sure you have nothing connected to non-used inputs on the mixer inputs, and that they are all turned down or disable - you might be getting some stray noise coming in from unused enabled inputs.

Thank you team, I am very surprised how helpful you have all been. I appreciate your info and will make a few adjustments and do a little more homework to improve what I can. I'm not at my studio at the mo' but I'll double check everything when I'm back at it :)
Thanks
