TAL Noisemaker is a good synth to start learning with, and it's free.

Can you name me what is more advanced in it?fluffy_little_something wrote:I think he will get bored very soon, it is such a basic synth.
The free JX-8P emulation is more advanced and sounds excellent since he likes the old analog sound...
This entire forum is wading through predictions, opinions, barely formed thoughts, drama, and whining. If you don't enjoy that, why are you here?

What does that mean? That discodsp it’s free or something? I heard many good things about discodspIngonator wrote:OB-Xd is free and sound wise could compete with most commercial analog modeled plugins:

The DiscoDSP website with v1.4 still seems to be down but the link at KVR is working AFAIK.

For starters, in my view the sound is clearly better, there is something lively about the PG8X sound that I just don't hear in Charlatan.Zexila wrote:Can you name me what is more advanced in it?

OB-Xd was open source and originally done by another developer (Datsounds) but the deveopment of OB-Xd had been taken over by DiscoDSP but it was always free. Since some months the DiscoDSP website is down due to the developer being ill.latorrejc3 wrote:What does that mean? That discodsp it’s free or something? So nothing is advanced really, just sound preference/taste thing...fluffy_little_something wrote:For starters, in my view the sound is clearly better, there is something lively about the PG8X sound that I just don't hear in Charlatan.Zexila wrote:Can you name me what is more advanced in it?

I think you should save up your money and get Zebra... it is fantastic for ambient/soundscape stuff... it is very powerful and also I think it is one of the best learning tools you can get for synthesis.
It has regular subtractive, additive, FM, some physical modeling and wavetable. Each of them is simpler than a dedicated synth of that type so it is not overwhelming. You can make sounds as simple or complex as you want. Zebra is the synth that helped me to learn synthesis more deeply

if you want the hans zimmer sound you have to pick up a CS80. not the plugin but an actual vintage yamaha cs80 220lb synthesizer.
