to be able to mute/solo single piano notes.

[1] amendment to avoid confusion, I mean the piano roll note (ie black or white key) not an individual midi note

i.e.

or if thats too much, just an on/off on each note.

This is for building up complex drum parts and being able to quickly a/b ideas.

another good idea would be able to right click a piano roll note and have a duplicate note option. This would make a 2nd instance of that note (eg. another C#4 or D3 etc). Useful for creating alternate versions of drum parts and be able to quickly drop them in and out.

Also it would be good to be able to automate above ideas.

(can you tell I've been programming drums today?)

I usually delete the notes to see how it would be without them and then undo to bring them back.

Or make changes and delete and undo to switch between them.

That's ok as a work around today.

You have to use the undo at the time of working on that drum part though. it's not like you can do a/b testing on a part then come back to it later and use undo, bacause you'll be undoing other stuff you don't want undo. (Or perhaps you want to keep both parts.)

A simple on/off marker (embedded on the piano key, say) would be simple and clear and fast.

Setting the velocity to 0 is the same no ?

Thats like StepChild/StepForms. When I got my one working I had great fun shifting the notes on the fly. Mouseclicking on the beat to change the note etc. I cant take credit for that of course, well done Mods!

no, because turning off a piano roll key (say C#4) would turn off every note on that piano key, perhaps even changing the colour of that horizontal strip.

I'm not talking about midi notes, I'm talking about a key on the piano roll itelf (also called a note  )

I think I've caused a bit of confusion by using the term note to describe a piano key.

This is what I mean:

Doesn't stepchild work for programming beats, better than trying to use the piano roll editor?

Me, I'd rather see a bonafide drum grid editor; not too much unlike stepchild, and also ability to edit via a notation window.

I fat-finger way too many notes. I can tell if I've done that when looking at notation, but with piano-roll, all the horizontal bars just start to look the same. A mouse-over indication of what note the bar is would be nice.

Personally I dislike drum stlye editors (al la cubase) because it puts everything 'in a box'.

A rythmn is not a set of notches in a bar that you can either turn on or off!

No, you must feel a rythmn and should not be confined to a set of possibilities.

The piano roll is good for my purposes, but would be just about perfect with the additions I suggested.
