Re Eventide Physion, I can't afford it, but I've been doing a sort of lo-fi poor man's version with Unfiltered Audio G8.

Set up your DAW to give G8's reject outputs their own channel. Change the gate type to one-shot mode, and engage the 'flip' switch. The effect is such that, every time the signal exceeds the gate threshold, it comes through the main outputs for attack+hold+release time, then out of the reject outputs until the signal exceeds the threshold again. Works great for separating the transient and body of 'obviously' transient material, where each transient = a spike in volume.

G8 is (AFAIK) 100% transparent when summing the main and reject outputs together (no artefacts at all -
it sounds like the plug-in is doing nothing) so it's surprisingly clean when it comes to applying different effects to each part. And of course, unlike Physion, you can use any effect in your library!

ah, spectral fx. the last missing link in my plugin list.
every time i find something on kvr that looks interesting, i end up asking myself the question "does it give me anything i haven't got from my melda bundle", and the answer is always no. so i have to admit, melda has actually cured my GAS!
but spectral plugins..
i search and search, but nothing is giving me the unique creative sounds i used to get from sonic foundry noise reduction plugin.
reafir comes very close, but i dont use that company for personal reasons, so the search goes on

As far as cost, that’s why I buy expensive plugins from KVR ;-). And in Ableton anyway, I just clone an instance to another lane in the rack and effect that way.

Can’t say that Physion is totally clean though. I do hear artifacts depending on the threshold settings.

i haven't figured a way to do this successfully in Cubase 6.5 yet unfortunately. it's so easy in Live, but for some reason isn't working in Cubase... i'll try the VST3... anyone using G8 successfully in Cubase?

How did you use sonic foundry noise reduction for sound design? If you change fft resolution to 128-512 and move any sliders it just gives noise or metallic sound...
What's the purpose to split sound into transients and non-transients?
Does anyone have soundhack vst plugins for linux? (Not for pd)

I know this is super old but if you are having trouble replicating fft based noise reduction you may want to look more closely at how it's achieved. It's basically a spectral gate/expander and also called spectral thresholding. It's attenuating frequencies that fall below a certain threshold level in the same way a broadband gate does. The main settings that will change the sound of spectral gating (and most spectral processing) are the fft size (directly effects the number of frequency bins) the overlap (in order to deconstruct and reconstruct the signal properly there are usually multiple ffts happening in parallel and offset in time while being multiplied by a windowing function) and then the way phase is handled. The difference between a 256 bin fft with a hanging window and overlap of 4 and a 2048 bin fft with a rectangular window and overlap of 1, with all other settings set up the same, is massive.

ReaFIR, and melda MSpectralDynamics both have reasonable amounts of control over all this stuff. You could also easily build your own in something like pure Data. There is a tutorial that will have you build a spectral thresholding processor.

There's also dtblkfx which does some really interesting things as well as more "standard" spectral tricks.

Another issue with spectral processing is coming up with interesting applications for it. Thresholding, spectrum mirroring, pitch shifting, and frequency shifting are very common and make up what many people consider the "spectral sound". Spectrumworx (who are in the process of doing something with their IP) had some really cool modules set up that were useful and fun. A couple of the algorithms in SpecOps are very unique and fun too. There's also fftease which is a set of fft objects for max that have been Ported to pure Data and other platforms. It has all sorts of cool stuff and is well documented.

I also have clicks with sonic foundry noise reduction. I will try reafir. Noise reduction lacks overlap. I saw only window slider. Whtat's the purpose of these spectrum tools if they produce roughmetalic and other noise? How are they treated further for harmonic result with pleasing sound? As far as i understand they are mostly used to kind of get a unique waveform from incoming audio stream but that waveform needs further harmonizing processing. I suspect that periodic clicks which depend on window in sonic foundry may be caused by cycling waves' meeting at nonzero points. Btw can i use spectralshapers spectralgate vst as substitute for reafir and does anyone have soundhack vsts compiled for linux as vsts?
