Distortion and saturation was not a feature of old vintage analogue gear either. The old SSL engineers said when they were designing their boards, the idea was to avoid any distortion to the signal and create the cleanest most accurate signal path that was possible. However they were limited by the technology and components available to them at the time. Yes they were some engineers who liked to record hot and clip their gear but there were working outside of the operating guidelines of the gear.

BEcause at those times classical music still prevailed and then it was found that distortion effects can create new influences on the minds. Thus the jwsh band the Beatles adored double tracking technique where voice of the soloist was doubled. When i was in my much younger years I perfectly heard that double tracking satanic thing and I insisted to the parents on the fact that the voice was doubled but no one believed me. Now many years after I don't hear doubling due to natural hearing loss with age but as an investigator of sound with all digital tools in my disposal I now know perfectly that it may take place. So the interesting idea is that some effects of the past like doubling should be avoided because children can perfectly hear the crap inside.

Concerning the remark about advocating genwave, I want to emphasize that I no longer recommend using genwave because of its instability and large latency. Also I don't recommend so called linear phase eqs because they have ringing artifacts which are even worse that those of non-linear phase eqs + great latency. Currently I recommend using hofa iq-eq which is equalizer + compressor in one + sidechain support + ms\mono\stereo separate processing + 64 bit internal processing + resampling to higher values + high db\oct values + etc. So the guy who recommended hofa plugins was not lying and hereby I confirm it. You must use iq-eq on tracks instead of all other eqs and compressors you have. The only exception is the master bus where you should use some eq with analog coloring and to that matter I can recommend free lufticus eq which surpasses any nonfree eqs as to coloration. Also I have found that hofa's compressors do not add aftifacts at all. Recently I have come across the phenomenon that samplitude's efx_comp was not able to compress my acoustic recording. Also another channel strip's compressor by another nonfree dveloper failed the same way. So be perfectly sure that a lot of plugins are just crap but hofa is the way to go. Hofa adds no coloration, so for that matter you are invited to use some saturation plugins but don't use built-in plugins of samplitude due to their instability and unpredicted artifacts.
