Define "better". Sylenth1 surely sounds way better to me. Feature wise, we don't have to argue of course. GUI wise, i think Sylenth1 has one of the best skins for any synth:pdxindy wrote: Sat Dec 08, 2018 5:35 pmBecause Synthmaster One is similar in layout to Sylenth. Given that's more in the pricerange of Sylenth1.

So, yeah, if you only look at features, almost anything will beat Sylenth1 these days.

I use the default one, it is best for my eyes.

Ever since synthesizers could store, save and load presets for many users it's very much about the available presets for a specific synth. And much less about it's potential. Many synthesizers where bought just to get to useo some of their presets.
Some presets became pretty famous (much overused). Either as an original synth sound or as a sample.
http://www.synthmania.com/Famous%20Sounds.htm
Anyway these choices/presets tend to gravitate towards specific user/target groups/user base. Like dance/trance producers. Obviously a very popular genre in electronic music.
With some effort, many synths can come pretty close to sounds of other synths. It's often very specific details that make some sounds really hard to emulate convincingly.

Exactly. For example the infamous supersaw. Almost every synth including free ones like Synth1 can do this, but, very few can really do it as well as Sylenth1. Which is why it's such a long runner in the respective genres.Kwurqx wrote: Sat Dec 08, 2018 6:29 pm With some effort, many synths can come pretty close to sounds of other synths. Actually...the Supersaw is more difficult to replicate then one might expect. It's not just the unison that makes it the Supersaw.
It has its origins in the Roland JP-8000
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_JP-8000
For the geeks among us: Adam Szabo has written a scientific thesis on th Supersaw where the whole thing is analysed in great detail...
"How to Emulate the Super Saw"
https://www.nada.kth.se/utbildning/gruk ... _10131.pdf
He then also made a really close emulation: the JP6K.
https://www.adamszabo.com/category/vst-plugins/
But we can get close enough just using saws in unison on other synths...
And we're supposed to be creatuve, not copycats...

I find the Sylenth GUI kinda meh. First and a bad one, it is blurry on my retina screen. Second, the workflow is not particularly good. No drag-n-drop modulation, no modulation visualization. The FX are all on separate tabs and even just the 16 step arp is itself 2 little tabs. Too much clicking for such a simple synth. The world has just passed it by in regards to GUI's.chk071 wrote: Sat Dec 08, 2018 6:12 pm

And features matter... Sylenth is lacking in some basic stuff. No support for breath or expression pedal. Oops, I use the expression pedal all the time. Of course no MPE support. Very limited modulation. Cannot modulate Osc detune, or filter drive or the envelopes at all.
And sound-wise, lots of synths are as good or better these day and they provide a wider sonic palette, better GUI's and sometimes lower price.

Well this concept called supersaw(7 voices unison) is kind of obsolete,no developer use it anymore - hypersaw(9 voices unison) is more modern usable,i like 8-16 voices diapason so typical supersaw to me is total waste of time for modern stuff,Syl1+SM1 and Synth1 is absolutely enough when you gonna need to do some super-hyper-mega-giga saw detune - Personal opinion don't want to argue.Cheerz

Yeah SM1 has those cool scanable wave tables like serum, but i like to look at them whilst scanning. But SynthMaster2.9 has the wave table view now. so Sylenth might have to collect some dust. I think I like them all. oops

According to the LD forum, S1 does support Retina displays. Have you contacted LD about your problem? He can't fix something he is not aware of...pdxindy wrote: Sun Dec 09, 2018 1:38 amI find the Sylenth GUI kinda meh. First and a bad one, it is blurry on my retina screen. Like most anything, your view on workflow is subjective. I like the workflow a lot as it is. I don't need drag and drop modulation when there are those nice panels that pop up and neatly present all sources and targets in categories. Actually, I know the synth so well, I hardly need them anymore. I just turn the mouse wheel by, say, 4 notches if I need pitch A for instance. There is still some space on the panels for additional sources and targets, though. But I doubt he will add anything. I think he focuses on maintenance and quality improvements, like oversampling in the new beta.
I see S1 more like a Minimoog: it is a classic and as such not supposed to have the latest bells and whistles. It sounds good and musical with what it can do, and that is what matters. I don't see people complain about the Minimoog's lacking even much more basic things such as velocity, PWM, polyphony or presets. Yet with S1 people keep complaining all the time. Strange...
There might be better-sounding synths, sure. But oddly, I can't convincingly recreate some of my favorite S1 patches in SM or Hive. The more S1 features one uses in a patch, the harder it becomes to emulate that patch in another, even a better synth.

Thanks for the suggestion... but unless the synth were dramatically improved, I'm not gonna use it anyway... so doesn't matterfluffy_little_something wrote: Tue Dec 25, 2018 4:34 pm

Yep different character and behavior, different generations 10 years actually separate them with tons of specific stuff but still working great together - you can explore same idea on different synth and achieve something interesting as experiment with different modulations, the beauty is curves, modulations, movement of the structure of the sound as definition and function :)Cheerz
