Sunshine was a good one. A lot of copy cats. Sound like anything else you've heard lately? :hihi:

don't know how many of you saw it or recognize it, but I always like the enemies at the gate soundtrack.

The first one that pops into mind always when it comes to theme songs (for some reason) are The Persuaders (that Mellotronaut already have mentioned)

But these are on my short list as well:

Williams also did the theme for the old Lost In Space, which is actually pretty cool. He was credited as 'Johnny Williams.'

Hawaii 5-0 theme;
Mission Impossible
Variou motifs in Shore's LotRs.

Greatest, I dunno.

Six pages and no one has mentioned that great collaboration of Burt Bacharach, The Hollies and Peter Sellers? :x

This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

...and Suicide is Painless hasn't popped out yet?

Come now, everybody knows that the best theme of all time is Ray Parker Jr.'s Ghostbusters:

For that matter, no Harold Faltermeyer yet? I love that cheeseball:

Eduard Artemiev gets love for his Tarkovsky scores, but I've been digging this one lately:

(might have to click through to YouTube to watch it)

Well, you didn't really define what you meant with "theme music". People seem to have assumed you were talking about movie soundtracks. Not necessarily. But if we are talking about "theme music" in movie soundtracks, I would say that Vangelis would be a serious candidate for me. Chariots of Fire, Blade Runner, 1492, all could easily qualify. I did a compilation of great movie themes in the Summer, and even excluding everything from Vangelis and Hans Zimmer (because those have a special place in my library) as well as the soundtracks from Star Wars and The Lord of Rings, I still had to force me to stop at 150 themes.

Anyway, maybe the best movie theme of all time is the theme of Tara from "Gone With the Wind" (composed by Max Steiner).

Yet nothing compares with the opening scene of "2001: A Space Odyssey". The introduction of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" from Richard Strauss, coupled with the movie scene, still gives me thrills (jump to 6:00):
