Here's one that I always found remarkably appropriate for a rather haunting film.

Oh yeah... Gheorghe Zamfir playing the pan pipes, and Marcel Cellier accompanying at the pipe organ. What is interesting is that the music wasn't even composed for the movie. It had been released previously. The film is great too, BTW.

Zamfir would be called later to collaborate with Ennio Morricone in the (also fantastic) Cockeye's Song from "Once Upon a Time in America"

Well, you didn't really define what you meant with "theme music". People seem to have assumed you were talking about movie soundtracks. Not necessarily. But if we are talking about "theme music" in movie soundtracks, I would say that Vangelis would be a serious candidate for me. Chariots of Fire, Blade Runner, 1492, all could easily qualify. I did a compilation of great movie themes in the Summer, and even excluding everything from Vangelis and Hans Zimmer (because those have a special place in my library) as well as the soundtracks from Star Wars and The Lord of Rings, I still had to force me to stop at 150 themes.

Anyway, maybe the best movie theme of all time is the theme of Tara from "Gone With the Wind" (composed by Max Steiner).

Yet nothing compares with the opening scene of "2001: A Space Odyssey". The introduction of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" from Richard Strauss, coupled with the movie scene, still gives me thrills (jump to 6:00):

Boom! Gone with the wind is giving superman a run for it's money for sure! I had been thinking about 2001, but abandoned it due to being a collection of famous scores instead of a freshly written score for a single project. Gone with the wind is wayyyyyyy up there at the top of the list tho! top shelf.

Jesus... 4 minutes and 22 seconds and I just went through every human emotion one can experience. How is it possible to fit all that in 4:22?

Hardware emulation list. I don't really need anymore effects, I need to learn how to use those I already have.

I also feel the need to devote an entire post to the works of Thomas Newman. Our modern day John Williams. A guy so prolific in his compositions and epic in the quality of his work I can't decide which is the best. So I'll throw it out there. Which is your favorite?

Road to perdition https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AS3FXKCxDL4

meet Joe Black https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNbaRiZJJQo

Shawshank Redemption? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkcBJawiIHA

Finding Nemo? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlibAuS ... 40&index=4

My favorite might be Wall E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-7LIojfezw

this carpetbaggers is pretty good stuff. I'm unfamiliar with it so, not added to the list, but absolute quality!
