SampleTank 4 on the way

My ST4 standard USB shipped today (feb 28)and should be here tomorrow Mar 1).
Someone mentioned that I had to pay Florida state tax 7% because IK "has a presence" in Florida.

Thanks for the review What are your thoughts on the chromatic percussion, Rhodes/EPs, orchestra and choirs?

I just listened to those a few minutes ago. The chromatic percussion basic samples are quite clean and full - they really did a stellar job capturing all of the new sounds, I would say. The vibrophone and marimba are very good, and the glockenspiel, of all things, kinda blew me away with its realism (invoked nightmares of Christmas parades long since gone!)

There are two new EPs in ST4 Standard - a 1973 tine based EP (Rhodes, I assume?) and a 1974 Wurlitzer. The Rhodes is very nice and can be warm or bright. The Wurlitzer seems a little flat to me, but maybe I'm just not a wurly guy and I certainly didn't spend much time with it. There are lots of patches for these two EPs, but I'm pretty sure they are the same samples with different effects chains and some of the parameters tweaked on the edit page.

Other than a tenor and a baritone sax, which I was surprised to find were as good or better than the renown Independence Pro "Candy" saxophone library, there is nothing new in ST4 standard for woodwinds. There are no orchestral strings at all (other than the ST3 standard strings). There is a trombone and a trumpet in the brass section, which I would assume are on par with the saxes, but I haven't tried them. I use more synths and tend to do some of my own sound design. I did find the ST4 engine editing features and effects breathed a lot of new life into Philharmonik 1 strings, which are more than sufficient for me.

Independence Pro has been my mainstay for years - it's a beast but can do some amazing things if you get your head around it. Some of the samples are definitely dated by today's standards though. I've used this, bolstered by ST3 SE edition, Philharmonik 1 and some carefully picked NI products for a few years. However, between acquiring Syntronik Deluxe and ST3/ST4 Standard, I think it is safe to say Indy Pro will now start gathering some dust.

Next issue - some new guitars are not authorized. The Black LP and the Parlor acoustic specifically show up in my list of Standard content, and they are listed as included in Standard edition, but when I try to load them, it tells me I'm not authorized for MAX edition. Anyone else see this?

There are version 1.2 library updates in your IK User Area that should rectify this.

And they did just that! Thank you. The parlor guitar is beautiful.

I only have Standard Edition so my "new" content is rather sparse, but the ST3 Standard edition fills in most of the blanks and some of that it truly excellent (and relatively new to me, as well, since I upgraded from ST3 SE just before ST4 was announced).

I'm pretty impressed with the C7 Grand Piano. Some of the world/ethnic content is truly spectacular and definitely on the same page as the NI stuff. I REALLY like the one patch using the Parlor acoustic that I am able to use (i have an authorization issue with the rest of the new guitars for some reason) I can see using this a lot - even though I am primarily a guitar player, LOL! I'm noticing a better dynamic range and authenticity to most of the new content, in general - I'm assuming more round robins and velocity layers.

The Vintage and Acoustic Pop kits included in ST4 standard are pretty good and more dynamic than the ST3 ones, which aren't bad, but they probably wont replace Modern Drummer for me.

Basses are awesome, but they were in ST3 as well - high point there
Synths are pretty good, as well, but I have Syntronik Deluxe which I LOVE!

The thing that trumps NI for me is the workflow. I have Syntronik, Philharmonik, ST3, ST4, very premium effects, and a single workflow for everything. The envelops, LFOs, filters (awesome filters, btw, based on Syntronik), strummer and arppegiator all work with the Legacy and ST3 content - the only thing that doesn't really that I see is the mod matrix, which is no show stopper for me (disclaimer: there are probably things I haven't found yet, though).

NI's workflow has always seemed disjointed to me - but I have some of their stuff and will continue to use it where it works for me.

Overall, I am very happy with ST4 and I believe it will serve me well.

loading multis from imported ST2 Librarys does not work at all , nothing changed with the update to 4.0.2 .

Been following this thread and does SampleTank 4 Max include all of the ST3 sounds or just some?

is anyone else missing all the effects in the drop down boxes at the bottom on the effects page? ever since i updated to 4.0.2 and some of my plugs now work now i can pull up a preset and go to the effects page and although the effects are in the rack via the preset i cannot select any other effect... the drop down menu is empty (blank). i have re-installed 4.0.2 and authorized it again to no avail. i have also installed the content lib update 1.2 no help. i have double checked the standalone and it too in fact has no selectable effects.

p.s. i have yet to revert back to 4.0.0 or 4.0.1

Instead browse and switch of effects, is available from the dropdown menu at the top of the effect rack...

vksf01 If you check in the Samples folder of your ST3 library, is this folder from the error message available (22_ST2 XL/Bass) ?

i wish mod matrix worked with anything other than SampleTank 4 sounds. i was playing with ST4 yesterday to get a taste of what it offers, and the synth sounds really come alive with it. it's a pity that Syntronik sounds don't avail of that - i very much hope they'd get a ST4 update to make them compatible with the engine. since i wasn't able to actually import anything, i couldn't check if sample import also enables use of mod matrix. i hope it does, because that would breathe new life in some of the samples i have. frankly, i don't see any obvious technical reasons why mod matrix wouldn't work with any sound. maybe not all destinations, but certainly it should be possible to modulate pitch/FX parameter with an LFO on any sample?!

also, i can see that IK has listened! the synth sounds in Syntronik actually come with "basic oscillator samples" that people can then build their own sounds with.

ah... now i feel dumb lol... there is a small drop down at the base of each slot and i was thinking that was the effects lol... it is the one up top that has the diff effects selection. my bad.. could have sworn it was at the bottom but apparently i had seen them up top. lol i ain't used it much since it was only standalone working for me. was farting around with the plugin this afternoon/evening and i ran across what i thought was a new problem but i just forgot where i had seen them. so that is the preset list? am i supposed to have individual effect presets? if so then THEY are not there. lol all i know is that drop down is blank cheers

That feature was added to the effects view in Syntronik UI, and has been carried over to ST4.

It is there so that you can save custom FX settings that you set for that FX, and then recall them in any other instrument rack.

Add your SampleTank 3 sounds path first in the settings list, then add the SampleTank 4 sounds last. Close the settings and let the database rebuild. Once I had done this, all of my ST3 sounds were located and loaded correctly. For some reason if the ST4 path is listed first, ST can only search that path for sounds. I'm just guessing by the error msg received. Bug?

Note: I couldn't find any way to change the order of the path list in settings, so I just used the remove button twice, then the add button. The add button lets you browse and select the content path.
