You have to know the strengths and weakness of your VST plugins, than it's not really necessary to have a minimal setup.

I also separate between my standard synth plugins that i use regularly to make music (that's not many), and synth plugins that i use for inspiration, sound experiments, or for personal pleasure....

Those are good points. I guess I’m of the mind that when I want a simple synth that sounds fantastic, I’ll usually turn to hardware. I guess “simple synth” is subjective, though. Still, I’ve got an analog poly that’s on par with Super 8, and bests it with a few features that are important to me.

But then there’s the inspiration/pleasure category. I’ve been known to buy a plugin just to spend a few days playing with it. I put the expense in the same box I put going out to dinner or a movie. I may get Super 8 just for one of those times when I’ve got some free time and feel like a change of pace. It’s just that Super 8 came out during my birthday budget drop, and I’m deep into a Peak.

If you have a Peak, you need nothing else, except maybe a keyboard version.

I'm not very familiar with NI philosophy. Do they implement new features along a synth lifespan?

If you have Reaktor 6 you can add whatever features you want to S8.

But how do you see a connection to Pro-53?

To me, the whole synth sounds a lot like (early/mid eighties) Roland....

The connection to Pro-53 is Prophet-5 Rev 3 that was on the desk of the guy who worked on Super 8 when I was visiting NI offices some months ago. Same one that was used when Pro-53 was created.

Can you really open up the core structure? Surely it's locked.

Sure, but that’s not quite a drag and drop type of thing, as previous experience trying to mess with Monark showed me. It’s the difference between buying a car with a factory installed collision avoidance system and installing your own. Possible? Sure, but that’s not like hanging fuzzy dice from your rear view. If someone in the know made a version of Super 8 that had an additional LFO, EG, Filter and Polyphonic Aftertouch abilities, I’d be on it, but I don’t really feel like spending the time to figure out and do that myself, when I already have options with those things on board.

TBH, that's what i thought too, when i read generic.

Read the same about Monark on Gearslutz yesterday, by the way. Maybe NI should rather sell some golden ears.

You know, these "generic" synths are my favorites. Very simple, great sounding, inspiring, straightfoward. TAL-Mod and Oxium comes to mind.
I'm the kind of guy who hates to play complex synths, hahah

Oxium - still one of my favorite "bread and butter" subtractives - start from init, pick a few waveforms, tweak the filter and some envelopes.

Same wirh Repro, Monark - given what it would have cost to own more than a few in hardware symths years ago, it's awesome to be able to own more than a few, even if the differences are subtle. Not necessary for making great music, but sometimes fun just to play with the same basic sounds and different envelopes, filters, etc...

I think, like with Kontakt instruments, there is a certain procedure, which includes contacting NI, involved (at least with commercial stuff). But, there's probably people here who know better about it.
