Also, and this might be answered if I try the beta, is it now possible to load a "normal" midi file and show it as a step clip or other drum-relevant visual representation? - if so that would be awesome.

Add your midi clip to a track. Add a new step clip. Select the first section and then Import from MIDI clip. Your midi clip will be quantized to the step clip grid. This has been in Waveform for while.

Not sure if I quite follow - but will give a try anyway - thanks for responding so quick btw. Seems like any subtle timing info in the original MIDI clip could be lost though in process of transferring to step clip? Perhaps a special drum grid, with slight shifting visible on the grid, could be introduced - I think Maschine does that. Having a full drum sequencer as part of the DAW would be killer!!!

Yes, the timing will be lost. It will be snapped to the grid.
