Out of all the melda effects, I'm least happy with MGranular. I think it's because it doesn't have any control over 'time' and feels quite limited, but whatever it is, I just haven't been happy with the output in the same way that I have been with other melda effects.

So with that in mind, I think there's an opening for a spectral granular effect, that uses the melda spectral effects to create interesting pads and 'smears' out sounds in creative ways. It would be useful for Sound Factory too I imagine, although latency is obviously going to be an issue.

Yes, I know you can sort of get granular type sounds over of MUnison and MSpectralDelay, but MUnison is really made to create multiple voices and MSpectralDelay doesn't granularize the sound, so neither work perfectly for this purpose and I haven't been able to redesign them in MXXX for this purpose.

Does anyone else think this could be an interesting idea?

Definitely interesting, but I wouldn't expect to see anything stand-alone until we see what we get in MSF, first, as per the posted plans (https://www.meldaproduction.com/doc/MSoundFactory):

Per-voice equalizer
Sampler & Multi-sampler (current samplers are for percussion only)
Spectral synthesizer, most likely image based
Granular synthesizer

Yeah, that sounds interesting indeed. Obviously I'm talking about an effect that takes a live input, rather than a granular synth, but you're right, the tech used to build the synth could be used to build out a live effect. Looking forward to it!

MGranular is an "MB" multiband plugin, right? So, have you used the spectrum crossover type?
I don't know if this will provide what you're looking for, but I find the crossover types pretty interesting. So far, I've mostly tried the frequency multiband stuff for compression. But I wonder if the spectrum type of split might work for you. It's demonstrated in this video:

Yeah I've used it, that spectrum crossover was originally my idea :) However, that's not really what I'm looking for. I'm thinking about doing different types of granular treatments across the frequency spectrum... Imagine being able to change the grain size from 1ms in the high frequencies to 1000ms in the low frequencies linearly in a straight line. Just like how you can in SpectralDelay. Now apply that same thinking to each of the parameters in MGranular. It could be pretty wild when you combine time, pitch, pan and grains.

Also, spectral effects allow for some cool 'time smearing' effects just by their spectral nature (e.g. high FFT values smear out all the transients). It would work really nicely for pads and other sounds than granular effects are good for.

What about using MXXX? Do you have that? (Or MXXX Core?) You can split a signal into frequency bands, and apply different effects to each band.
* I did wonder about that...I only just now watched the MXXX video that shows how to do that. So I did learn something today!
Anyway, have you tried it that way?

Yeah I used mxxx a lot. The difference between multi band and spectral is that with spectral you get a fully variable control of settings over the frequency range. With multi band you just have a number of set, static settings split between x number of bands. It's way less powerful and not really comparable. It's like comparing a multi band dynamics to spectral dynamics.

Ah, now I get it! I understand Spectral Dynamics just enough to understand what you mean now.
Looks like you have another interesting idea. I imagine that such an application would be very CPU intensive, but I don't know much about programming and computer science. Let's see what Vojtek says!

I got some lovely reverse delays with MGranular but often they would go out of sync and not restart correctly and I stopped using it. So I would also like more control over time. Sounds interesting with a spectral granular effect.

Well, hopefully one day. But I think you can do quite some magic using MXXX, where you'd consider each lane a granular generator (just by removing parts of it using an LFO for example) and then doing something with the rest.
