There’s a lot of diversity there, actually. I don’t know if there’s any one “genre” to pin it to, but I’m pretty deeply entrenched in that sound, if there is one.

My absolute favorite album of all time is the double-length “The Fragile”, though the above examples probably don’t at all represent that.

After listening to some of your 80s album, I thought of earlier NIN stuff. I thought: “I wonder what this would sound like if tweaked to be like ‘Pretty Hate Machine’”.

All in fun and good cheer, of course :-)

Don't get me wrong. I'm a big Trent Reznor fan. But some of the sounds he gets (he's a master synth programmer) I'm not even sure how to do some of that stuff and most synths don't come with NiN patches. They're just too out there. So aside from the songwriting aspect, there's the sonic pallet aspect and I'm just sure I can pull that off.

I’ve been analyzing NIN for ages. The sound effort is clearly an ethos more than a specific technique, and a lot of people put their hands into it over the various albums and eras.

I’ve done some work to emulate it myself (check out my own SoundCloud if you like), and I have enjoyed the following thread over at GearSluts:

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/electro ... ynths.html

Charlie Clouser (and another NIN alumni?) even posted there to offer their recollection on the names of the tools, how they were used/misused/abused, and the various ways in which they all worked at the sounds during the first three or four NIN releases. It’s a fascinating thread for anyone interested in what makes NIN sound like NIN, even if there’s no real answer.

It sounds fascinating and I'm all for it (though I don't think I can do NiN justice) but this isn't something that will happen overnight.

But I am going to put it on my to-do list. I'm dead serious. This is one of the few things that I have never tried to tackle.

For obvious reasons.

Very different from NIN.
If I saw you doing any other genre I’d say any foreign genre would be good.
Look up dangdut. It’s influenced by Bollywood and Middle Eastern pop but features predominantly western instruments such as guitar, keyboards, and drum machine.

I’d like for you to listen to a few of these videos, especially the first and last few. This might be something up your ally. I could see you could do this genre since it uses a mix of live instruments and synths/drum machine mostly or at least accessible synths and drum machines like DX7, D-50, M1, Wavestation, and Technics KN2000 and Alesis and Roland drum Machines.

The lyrics are mostly about broken hearts, sappy love tales, or cheating or basically any love or relationship related themes, as well as some with folk based lyrics and stuff. But they could be about anything.
Many paid and free VSTs as well as Kontakt libraries. As well as HW synths/drum machine and acoustic instruments.

Let me know if you want a vocalist for something. I’d be happy to give it a shot. :-)

I find it terribly difficult to put words/lyrics and songs together, though I’ve made plenty of each separately. So it might be a fun experiment to sing someone else’s stuff again (especially if you’ve got a model of what you want via a vocaloid temp track).

I'll definitely let you know if I need help with anything.

In the meantime, have you seen the poll, all the people who voted "My music sucks. Stop making it?"

I never knew I had so many loyal fans.

I haven’t voted and the forum won’t do anything when I select view results (it just rolls that link away and no results are shown).

I don’t think I’d give that option to people if I made such a poll. I’d hate to see how many people would choose it even as a joke.

In order to see the results, you actually have to vote. Even I had to vote to see the results. Don't understand why though.

Does that surprise you in THIS forum?

I've actually done several country CDs over the course of 43 years. My most recent one "A Whole Lotta Country" that featured this gem.

I admit I’ve no interest in country. That’s just how I feel about it and I try not to judge an entire world of music per only my tastes (nor the people who enjoy said music). It just isn’t for me.

I’ve no use for a lot of music, it seems. It impresses me when people are able and willing to experiment with many genres, it’s just never been how I function (and that’s probably a bad thing).

Now that's some impressive range. Although you don't sound humble enough. Country music is about letting everyone know how humble you are.
