i look forward to it.

im sure you've picked up a few techniques on all of these tribute type things, as you say, its how we progress :)
I've essentially learned 2 main things.

1. Various arrangement techniques. Each artist has his or her own unique way of arranging songs. There are all these subtle nuances that you really have to listen for. It's those little things that actually give each artist their unique sound. Listen to NiN's synth sounds and how they're used. Very different from most artists.

2. Mixing technniques. How each artist mixes their songs is sometimes very unique. Queen vocals in particular. There are even tutorials online how to get that vocal sound.

As a result of all this, I'm doing things that I would have never thought of doing on my own. And now those things have become part of my tool box. Eventually, I'll be doing my own songs that have a combination of all these little tricks that, hopefully, will develop into a sound that is uniquely my own, though I'm not going to hold my breath on that.

well, more than anything, try to enjoy it :)

also, i notice country still has no votes

That doesn't surprise me in the least. What really surprises me is that there was actually one vote for show tunes. Wow!

As Mr Wilde said, "“Talent borrows. Genius Steals." :hihi:

I've been stealing my whole life so I must be a super genius.

How did you like the videos I posted? (The foreign ones especially).
Many paid and free VSTs as well as Kontakt libraries. As well as HW synths/drum machine and acoustic instruments.

I coulda voted country, but those two assholes, certainement non

the thing about stealing over borrowing is ownership changes hands

Honestly, it's just not my thing. They weren't too far off from those other videos you posted of those groups that do the kind of music I think I called synth demo music? I get you're really into that stuff but I just can't get into it.

Believe it or not, what I really do like a lot that surprised me is J-Pop. In fact, I even did a whole K-Pop inspired CD a year or so ago.

Some of my favorite groups

AKB48
E-Girls
E-Street
Baby Metal
Morning Musume

Just to name a few. AKB48 is my all time favorite. Their songwriters are amazing. Some of the catchiest stuff I've ever heard.

Here's my J-Pop/K-Pop inspired CD (with Vocaloid vocals) if you're interested. You might actually like some of this.

Just for the heck of it, I took some NiN songs at random and calculated the BPM of each one.

Terrible Lie - 88 BPM
Down In It - 104 NPM
Sanctified 107 BPM
Something I can Never Have - 107 BPM (double time)
Kinda I Want To - 104 BPM
That's What I Get - 111 BPM
The Only Time - 95 BPM
The Greater Good – 83 BPM

Okay, that's enough. Now, here are my 7 songs so far.

Hammers And Nails - 84 BPM
Rip Out My Heart - 96 BPM
Is This Sexy Enough For You - 104 BPM
I Got Nuthin For You - 117 BPM
Castrated - 93 BPM
Your Body - 85 BPM
Tool - 105 BPM
Stones In The Graveyard – 111 BPM

So as you can see, I'm right in the ball park. NiN's songs groove more so it gives the impression that they're faster but they're really not.

9th track from my upcoming CD "Hammers And Nails"

I really stretched the boundaries of EQ and Compression on this one. When the kick comes in you can really hear the drastic difference. Took me a long time to figure out how to do this and several compressors. The key was MaxxVolume on the master buss.

Definitely won't be everybody's cup of tea.

Stones In The Graveyard

I think I'm dead I cannot tell
I think I'm dead and gone to hell
It's black and cold and smells real bad
Damn worst death I've ever had

Stones in the graveyard
Stones in the graveyard
Stones in the graveyard
Stones in the graveyard

I think I died that day in June
Underneath a blue full moon
You hit me hard and broke my skull
After that it all went dull

Repeat Chorus

Instrumental Break

Repeat Chorus

I guess it's time to cash my chips
And take my ride on crimson ships
The way to hell is paved with gold
Shame I died before too old

Repeat Chorus

Sure, as long as I can give an honest review. Also, comments are needed on one of my songs for me to reciprocate.

Post

Yeah that was just my wife's impression. I know he has some slow stuff. How busy the percussion is plays a role in it. I can't really comment too much on NIN. I'm a Skinny Puppy fan. The two are usually mortal enemies though I try not to be like that.

I did really like the show tune you did recently and have listened to it quite a few times. Welcome back.
