Not quite, but I have mostly avoided using it, because I find it intimidating and chaotic.

Options -> Preferences -> Project -> Track/Send Defaults
There one has to click in the field Record Config (regardless of what it says there) and check the last entry on the pop-up list.

Why would anyone look for a global setting in there?!
it's an individual track setting, not a global setting. what's happened is you've changed the default setup for new tracks. right-click the record button on any track and you'll get a context menu with the same options.

you can save any track (or group of tracks) as a track template, and it will save the record config / routing / vst states. I don't actually remember what my default track settings are because templates are so useful

By global I meant that, unlike with the left click on a track, this change is applied to all tracks in future projects. I don't have to do it again.
It seems to work now, so I will leave it this way.
I just spent a lot of time on deleting almost all shortcuts, that I would never use anyway, but some of which interfere with Sylenth1's and other shortcuts.

Now I am trying to figure out how I can keep the GUI's of different tracks from being closed when selecting a different track.
With the Diva demo that behavior sucks because every time I select that track again, the GUI opens again with the demo splash thingy one has to click away.

There are some FX options you can access from the FX chain window where you can change that. I don’t think that’s default behavior so you probably changed something.

Found it, thanks :)
But now GUIs no longer move to the foreground when selecting a track. Nor does clicking on a GUI select the track.
Gee, Reaper sucks, I don't know what is going on the heads of those programmers. Their way of thinking is incompatible with mine.

What do you mean by 'stack' exactly?
You can have any number of FX in a track or take (as long as you computer can handle it).

You mean loading and saving a bunch of effects? You can either save a complete track state with all it's effects and such (including multiple tracks and busses.. this is how I save all my synth stuff that has complex 3rd party effects and routings) or you can save a single tracks effect chain.

Reaper is a great DAW. Not without it's faults, but the customisability is it's main strength.

It can also be a weak point, when you lost time to customize instead of making musik !

Yeah not really, if i spend an hour customizing something that saves an hour in each following session, your conclusion doesnt compute.

Reaper is this simple.
Do you want a DAW that works how you designed it to work, reaper.
Do you want a DAW that you learn to work, every other DAW.

There is no advantage or disadvantage in one approach vs the other, just preference.

Is there any setting that automatically switches the featured GUI to the one of the plugin selected by clicking on a given track on the left side?
Ideally the GUIs of all the tracks that are not selected disappear to prevent a messy monitor full of GUIs.
When I use the green FX button, the GUI of that track is alternately displayed and closed, but that track does not get selected by pressing the green FX button.
Likewise, clicking on a GUI does not select the corresponding track.

The way such simple things are not or oddly implemented drive me crazy.

Reaper is so ugly I almost feel sorry for it
