Thanks. So it seems there a bunch of semi abandoned products which try to do the same thing (which would be useful if they worked well and were still supported).

XLN Audio is actively supporting XO.

AIUI (and from what I can tell having used the demo for a bit), what XLN does is group like samples of similar things together - so it's good for finding kicks that are similar to the kick that I already have). In that, it's similar to Samply (which I have -- and which also appears to have been semi-abandoned as the startup behind it pivots to audio hosting).

The promise of Atlas and Sononym is that they could find similarities across different types of samples (so find the snares, high hats and percussion that go with a given kick -- or find loops that have some form of similarity to each other).

I think that's right. The Sononym dev said the difference between their product and XO is that XO has a single pre-designed way of categorising sounds, whereas Sononym uses a real-time, tweakable AI. Does that really matter though? For me the usefulness of XO is mostly about the ability to very very quickly scan through sounds. And the fact I can mouse around to choose sounds. Sononym gives you a list so it feels a lot less like it's my own choice.

Each to their own, but I have an issue with the concept of "find the snares, high hats and percussion that go with a given kick"; I'd rather wander about on the Space trying variations that appeal to me at the time

Yeah fair enough. I’d like to experience the idea executed well before I dismiss it entirely.

Isn't this term of service from Initial Audio a bit hair-rising? A remixer has to buy a license of the synth used in a foreign track? :?

I never read anything like this...or do other companies have similar terms of service?
Any remixer of the track you create which uses INITIAL AUDIO copyright(s) will also need to purchase a license prior to the release, as our license is non-transferrable.

Weird, so IF the track used Initial Audio on it then someone else's borrowing a part of that song for remix would need to buy a private license for it, very odd and very hard to enforce. Doesnt make sense as any remixer would need to shell out thousands for 'borrowing' plugins and vsts present in the track? Anyone here who has experience releasing remixes of songs able to comment further on this?

Biggest issue is how they'd prove it was used. Luckily they're plugins are generally dirt cheap and not good so unlikely being used by anyone serious (due to the wealth of competition).

I think those terms mean that you shouldn't let a remixer use your PC which has their licences installed on to do the remix using their software.
Very hard to enforce that.
Aren't remixes usually done from stems in which case no licences are required for the software used to create the stems?
So if you let someone remix on your PC, if they are using stems it's not an issue.

Many years ago I participated in remix competitions and didn't even know which plugins were used. There wasn't any information about it. I've used audio stems.

I was thinking about buying Sektor and 808 Studio because I don't have anything against it if it sounds a bit lo-fi as I make some kind of funny music but first I sadly had to read in the terms of service "cannot be resold" and then even more strange this part about remixes... :?

Post

I have a feeling that they don't really know how remixes are usually made, and think that the original track is sent to the remixer, including the plugin tracks.

TBH, I wouldn't bother about that too much. Nobody can possibly know which plugins have been used on the original track. So -> nevermind it.

Haven't tried this myself but it's worth a look:

Polarity's youtube channel is excellent for all things Bitwig.
