Jolaff wrote: Sun Jan 17, 2021 12:44 am Hi,

I'm shopping for a filter. I really like the sound of FabFilter Volcano but I'm not sure to like the modulation stuff.

As 130 USD (for Volcano) is quite expensive (to me) for a filter, I would like to know if there is other options I should take a look...

Thanx
Sounds like you just answered your own question... Fabfilter Simplon. Same filters, cheaper, light on CPU, and lacking all the modulation. I rarely need all that modulation myself, so I use Simplon far more than Volcano.
Simplon has 3 filter types per filter, Volcano has 10?
Yeah, good point, I should’ve been more clear. The filters in Simplon are also in Volcano, but Volcano has more. Simplon is basically a stripped down version of Volcano, having the most essential filter types and features, which is what I assume the OP is looking for. :tu:
Logic Pro | LUNA Pro | OB-X8 | Prophet 6 | OB-6 | Rev2 | TEO-5 | Pro 3 | SE-1X | Minitaur | Deepmind 12D | Slim Phatty | TR-1000 | Analog RYTM mk2 | Digitakt 2 | TD-3 MO | TD-3 | Maschine+

No not really, i have it to unlock EQ in mxxx core. It’s uninspired from filter perspective - it only has clean filters. It’s basically Mequalizer with mod section
MWobbler has a LOT of filters tho, name doesn’t do it justice tbh.

Just for fun I'll mention karmaFX synth which can be used as a modular effect. A nice selection of filters and modulation options available. Build what you want.
A bit pricey, but it includes a whole big modular synth too. Was 40% off recently tho, don't know if the sale is still on atm.

Kinh wrote: Sun Jan 17, 2021 11:04 am I bought volcano a few years back but never used it. I dont think it's value for what it is. A filter's a filter, you dont need to spend big $$$ on them. The differences are so minimal, especially tone.
If you already got a stock filter with basic slopes and drive on then that's all you need.
I got the soundtoys filter freak and has modulation capabilities as does volcano but the sound is very similar to my stock ableton, the only major difference is the resonance squeals a bit more and this is supposed to be one of the best on the market. It's basically the same shit. How often will you need to modulate like crazy in volcano or something like that? Not very. And if you do, it's easier in your daw.

In short, save ya money!
Yeah sure , that's why so many developers try to ge the non linearities right and few succeed
The age of simple 90's bi-quad filters is long past us , but if you can't hear the difference that's good for you :tu:
interesting. but i dont think ya know wha ya talkin' bout
Tell that to somebody like Leonardo Laguna Ruiz (https://www.vult-dsp.com), who builds different filter types on breadboards and then circuit models them with top notch DSP.

There are a dozen of them and the differences are substantial.
Different 'types', yes. But brands are virtually the same. LP can only cut off frequency, it doesn't really have a particular sound compared to other LP filters, at least noticeable enough. It's all clever marketing designed to wet your appetite. Most of the shit we buy we dont use. Why is that? Cause we've been conned.

So when you see some brand saying this filter is classic and modeled on vintage circuitry and all that rubbish, remember it's just a filter and it's function is to cut frequency so the odds of it having a particular sound compared to others is virtually 0.

We've been conned? Poor lad.

Another vote for Shade which aditonally offers a great comb and of course the modulations if you need them.
I lost my heart in Cap de Creus

slim filters
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

seriously dude, that's a null statement. It's like saying that movie was boring. How can the movie be boring if it only is to one person. who is the person? is he an authority on films or is he talking shit. if i know this person well, i may be inspired or not to see this film based on my awareness of the personality of him alone. But none of that information is at hand in this case nor has your statement been supported with any resemblance of an argument. thus it must, in the name of logic be rendered false.
