I agree with people saying scaled-down synths. Also, what synth (and synthesis) to choose is a matter of what type of sounds one prefers.

I would go with Lynx from Xenobioz. Free, super clear. Also about a thousand included presets and sounds good. Plus the ability to draw the sound waves and see what happens.

Another thought: MUX by MuTools (also get MuLab if you don't have a DAW; it's more or less the same price). Wih MUX, one can build synths of one's own, and once again see what happens. It's also possible to take apart exisiting synths in MUX and see how they were created.

I guess what I'm suggesting is simplicity and experimentation. Good luck!
