I've got an old box I'm quite fond of. It's got a 4690K chip in there which can be taken up to 4.6GHz sometimes on air with a serious overclock. I've not tried o/c'ing it yet. It took me enough fuss to just put on the Hyper 212 Coolermaster - https://www.coolermaster.com/catalog/co ... o/#gallery

It's a beast (the cooler, and maybe the chip as well).
The 4690K is a 4 core CPU, for a CPU with 8 core or more the hyper 212 evo
is not up to the task, needs a more capable cooler

A less expensive option can be the Thermalright Frost Spirit 140

I used some old Arctic Silver I had that had not been put in the fridge. Seemed ok to me. Took me three or more swipes to get it right. In the end you just don't worry. Jesus, what a fuckin' mess.
The good old silver!
But today we got better thermal paste that is also not conductive.

Yeah, not for 8 cores! That makes sense.

I would advise people not to buy this cooler. They still sell it. I watched about 7 videos with people installing it. Still don't know how they did it. I was in tears by the end of the day. Crying my little eyes out.

Oh noes, gotta take it off again and wipe my i5-4690K down AGAIN!

:help:

It's a little bitch - whoever designed it needs to be taken out the back and given a stiff talking to. I mean, I've installed a few coolers in my time. This one is a horror. Do not!

Having said that. It cools my i5 down to very good temps.

But today we got better thermal paste that is also not conductive.

Great advice! Thank you.

I'm wanting to do a monster budget build soon. Don't feel like dropping 4K on a rig. But what can I do with 1K? Is it possible?

It seems silly going the other route with hardware - all my new Akais and Elektrons and still most of my rig is PC - it makes sense to have something that is highly powered. I don't mind o/c'ing but I don't want to go mad.

Thanks for your help Pictus, your posts are always very informative!

I had heard that AMD was good, but I worry about compatibility. Like, I know Massive X requires a specific chip feature. Am I wrong to worry about this?
AMD is the TOP dog now, the only compatibility problem you can have is with UAD stuff...
I do not know what works or not, but you may check at UAD forum/support and

I’m not sure. I’ve always been a bit timid about building my own computer. Not the actual building part, but I worry about choosing the right components. I’d do it if someone said, “buy x, y and z, then put it together.” I’d probably be better off just buying the best off-the-shelf thing in my budget. Not really sure.
I did that in viewtopic.php?p=8081813#p8081813
I put together a 3950x system a year ago February and it worked with UAD Duo and Quad cards. It required a BIOS update but the older UAD-2 cards were working fine on that machine.

I think if the goal is something on the order of VCV Rack, it hammers on one core so clock speed is crucial and cores means nothing. The way I work uses cores and distributes, even is part of the setup, 'threads (not the same as cores of course, but related) per instance' in VEP. Don't know if a higher clock speed would benefit or not, that was a pricing choice and there wasn't that much difference for the mo' money.
Yeah, I think it varies from plugin to plugin, plus different DAWs handle multi-core differently too. I definitely know that plugins like Expressive-e’s Noisy go from unusable to OK when you turn on the multi core. Same with RePro.

Using parts of the old PC will help keep the cost down...
There is always more cost effective options, but if they meet the
requirements...

That's a good point. I got a quite nice Fractal Design R4 case. Got 3 SSD drives in it, and 3 Rust/Glass spinners. Thing is, you can't hook them all up at the same time. I really don't like this case anyway. Prolly gonna bin it. But still, lots of old drives to use. Prolly the fault of my Power supply of course and nothing to do with Fractal design. I should put that PSU in my old XP case (coolermaster storm!) and jig it that way instead of getting a new psu for the Storm (it blew up).

Shit f**k, I think it was The Crow that said it's not a good idea to drunk post! f**k shit, he/she mighta been right.

But I think you are on to something using up old parts. I have money. I just prefer to spend it on Akai Samplers (old and new) these days.

I do plan to do a serious super build in a year or two's time. But the reason I'm replying to your post is because I DO actually have a few old bits and pieces I would rather see used up in to something useful.

I suppose a Case is a good place to start. And it don't get much better the Fractal Design R4. Not a great Case. But not a bad Case.

Shit, turns out it has 8 3.5" bays, I'm a fukcing idiot. The crow was right.

I may be gone for some time!
