wpostma wrote: Fri Jun 11, 2021 1:12 am I heard from their support people that it does NOT need an always on network connection, and that offline normally works.

There was kind of a perfect storm. A major internet outage at a very major cloud company (Fastly). Plus a bug that caused the activated running Bitwig apps to deactivate while running. The fastly outage wouldn't have caused the whole problem, a bug in Bitwig also caused this.

Support told me they're removing this offending code and this WILL NOT Happen again, even if their cloud services go down.

If the WholeDamnBitwigCloud is down, my understanding is you can't activate a new copy but once a copy is activated it should work without any internet connection needed and without any login prompt at startup of bitwig.
So I hope you're right about this, but this bug seems to be pretty old, if it is in fact a bug that Bitwig prompted me for a serial a few times when I first authorized it about a year ago, then when this outage happened did so again.. I suppose it could be a problem with an online computer where when it checks for updates it's momentarily not finding your authorization.

All that said, it still only has one of my two authorizations listed in my profile at bitwig.com, and it thinks I registered in 2014, more like late 2019. It seems a really weird area of their website and general coding to not have locked down?

You're still talking about this. I think you guys should buy some roland cloud synths on top of it to get the best of always online ... at least in the past there were a couple of heated discussions about rolands vsts being deactivated out of nowhere ... and they didn't even need a cloud provider outage.
What we all forget is the "root cause" of all of this - software piracy. If companies don't protect their software then they will easily be out of business in a minute after a release.
And if a company does piracy protection with software then there's always "software is never free of bugs" ... We could choose. Would you want hardware dongles? Copy protection with codemeter like Avenger Synth introduced a year ago. iLok?
I mean outages happen every day. For the complexity of the whole system landscape involved (the cloud) it's pretty stable, as is bitwig by the way.

So this is where we see how this whole update plan can go south. 3.3.9 on the laptop here, this morning I'm logged out, deauthorized etc. They can paint this however they want to, but the laptop phones home, and fails your authorization, doesn't matter how or why, this is what it's doing.

So will Bitwig provide a solution for v3 or only for the new betta? That's the test of Bitwigs metal.

Trusting the trust ... Even with the best of intent by software designers, this can result.
It hearkens to the sort of principals outlined by the FSF.

I have certainly launched Bitwig on my Surface in locations that don't have internet connections and never had any issues. I actually didn't even realized the software was calling home in any way. It's so puzzling how this happened and I think they should release a statement describing their long term solution so it doesn't happen again. At least not in the way that it happened.

To me this is the big deal: Phone Home (Is this another Audacity 3?)

But at the some time an easy solution: Stay off the internet while using it from now on.
I still have a feeling that this is due to a recent change in their system... just my personal view.

I hear that if you type out your username and password here, the bitwig devs will upgrade your account so this doesn't happen again.

got Ablton 10 lite free sh*t ! useless....
Ableton lite is uselless without 3rd party vst plugins (that is only limitation). In less than a month i will share my project for gpc that im working in Ableton Lite. Im sure that all of you will be impressed with final results. It is different approach than other daws (or ableton standard, suite..) because of tracks number, but i will show you how you can do amazing stuff in one project (without bouncing and stuff)

This is the Bitwig forum, not the place for sharing Ableton stuff
