Time to repent brother !! Thou shall not underestimate the dominion of FM synthesis !!
Sorry, I thought this thread needed a WTF post to release the pressure.
Well that's not actually true based on my experience. Many people programmed their own patches in the early days of the DX7. Cosmo Watts and Bo Tomlyn are two that come to mind right off the bat.beely wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 9:43 pm because basically no-one programmed their own patches on the DX7.
Ehhh not really. I'd love to find that bank again if for nothing else to see if those patches really were worth looking for over the years but wading through that many patches to maybe find a 30 year old bank doesn't seem like a whole lot of fun.beely wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 9:43 pm I mean I can dump a filelist, but do you *really* want to scan through 118,000 patch files..?
Of course I didn't mean *literally not one single person* - clearly there were professional programmers, and a few hobbyists and enthusiasts would tinker (witness the DX7 programming articles in my archive as an example). But as you no doubt know, the vast majority of regular musicians buying DX7's were not programming, and barely even tinkering, the DX series was notorious for this - hence why the DX7 basically gave birth to the third-party presets and commercial preset industries.Teksonik wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 10:04 pmWell that's not actually true based on my experience. I have no knowledge about it to add anything substantive, I was just offering some suggestions as to where/what/how to look should you want to scratch that itch - certainly there is no bank in the cart called "germandude" (bit of a weird title for a bank of your own patches, but heyho!).Teksonik wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 10:04 pmI'm quite confident the "German Dude" bank was not a compilation but the work of one person who I have long forgotten but his bank has lived on in my memory.
Again that was not my experience. Many people who bought a DX7 around here programmed their own patches. Maybe things were just different in Las Vegas.beely wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 10:18 pm So when I say "no one", I really mean, 99.5% of DX7 owners weren't programming it at all, which as a shorthand for a quick forum response is reasonable.
Yes you're probably right. Many of those patches from the early days were lost before the internet became a common method of sharing.
Let's assume you we're 10 years old when you got your CX5m , so you must be around 50 years old .BenfordLaw wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 5:00 pm
I used to have a CX5M, when they first came out, did you?
Indeed! There are a few GS1's around and apparently there is even a GS1 with the development system owned by a guy in LA - the development system was essentially a tool to program the sounds on the GS1 (this was also used to program the DX sounds for Toto, and apparently some of those sounds can't be replicated by the later DX7 stuff). There are images on Google, it's quite a cool looking thing. I know Manny Fernandes (another prominent DX voicing guy) is looking into trying to get hold of it.jancivil wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 12:04 amMost of the ROM patches were Leuenberger afaict, who goes back to the GS-1 and the very development of the project. Now there's something *basically* no_one has.
Maybe you could do your own work, as your idea of decent is clearly different to everyone elseBenfordLaw wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 12:33 pm Maybe we at KVR could take a portion of the presets each and go through them, and save the decent ones...
Thanks for the link!sprnva wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 12:40 pm Another option might be to try this online preset generator. The results will likely vary a lot but it might be a bit less samey.

I don't remember EVER asking what FM is capable of. Can you show me where I did?gentleclockdivider wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 11:48 pmLet's assume you we're 10 years old when you got your CX5m , so you must be around 50 years old .BenfordLaw wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 5:00 pm

Yet , here we are 40 years later and you're still asking what FM is capable of ?
Sorry , I can't compute that
