It's not always either, but it would typically sound as a B minor (B as the root tone and D as the third). The rest depends on the context and whether or not the rest of the music establishes the key as B minor.

Also try the key of G - G is the root, B is the third, D is the fifth which is a common place to start a song. Does it feel like the melody resolves to G?

Do you want the "root note" of the chord of the moment, or the "key" the melody+beat is in?

It'd be most efficient to upload a few seconds of audio if you do need an exact answer: https://vocaroo.com

You can't establish a root note without having enough material that clearly draws you towards one. If you just play two notes, they're just two notes. You need a bit of melody and/or harmony going on in order to "feel a pull" towards a specific note.

1. thx guys, i need to export this and upload, but for example this beat melody, here he shows at 1 minute the piano melody, then comes the strings.

I'm not trying to be mean here, but I think you can easily answer this for yourself if you just take the first few bars of the second video, hum or play along with the melody, and then try to find the tone that the melody has to END in so that it will feel settled and complete, and not as if it wants to go on to another note. That finishing note will most likely be your root note, as other posters above have indicated. There isn't really any theory needed beyond that, especially in a simple case like this.

I am too curious to see what your own guess is, so I can't just tell you ;-)

EDIT: I meant second video, not first (the one with the guy playing piano)
