Has anybody sorted through DX7 presets for the decent ones, for Dexed?

Thank you! That's more like it - somewhat decent presets at last.carrieres wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 9:22 am Download this compilation :

and try the banks into AViC folder
For those who seem incapable of working out what I mean by 'nasal FM' presets, i.e. the vast majority of the available DX7 presets, go to the Ajay folder in the above Dexed cart zip file, and listen to:
PianoBoTIM
PERKSTRNGS
DX-FILITAR (a particularly good example of that awful 'nasal' FM sound)
SIX-STRING
among many others.
And thanks for all the people who filled this thread with irrelevant, off topic stuff which other people - who read the thread title and maybe hoped to find an answer to it, obviously don't want to read. Start a new thread if you want to discuss anything off topic...
As it is, I am giving up with Dexed and any other DX7 emulations forever, it's a waste of time, there are so few decent sounds it's not worth it.

I wonder if those PPG patches for DX7 actually came from some of the people in Waldorf's orbit, I can't remember all the names but I'll have a look later, a number of them have websites.
It also seems that the DX Club still exists, I was a member back in the 80s when everything went out on paper.

Since I have too much time on my hands , let me see..BenfordLaw wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 11:22 amI don't remember EVER asking what FM is capable of. Can you show me where I did?gentleclockdivider wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 11:48 pmLet's assume you we're 10 years old when you got your CX5m , so you must be around 50 years old .BenfordLaw wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 5:00 pm
I used to have a CX5M, when they first came out, did you?
Yet , here we are 40 years later and you're still asking what FM is capable of ?
Sorry , I can't compute that
You clearly demonstrated your lack of fm knowledge in the dedicated ops7 thread

I was hoping to see a video showing loads of great presets from OPS7, so far I haven't seen one, maybe there is one in this thread that I missed? If it doesn't have loads of good presets, are potential customers just supposed to believe that THEY can make good presets with it, when no evidence has been provided that it will be anything other than more of the same old, boring FM sounds
unquote
I highlighted the important part which clearly demonstrates that .
Someone who actually knows FM synthesis knows what it's capable off .
Now ,let's give it a rest

I’ve not read the entire thread but... have you tried Tone2 Nemesis ? FM synthesis supposed to be "advanced”... As far as I’m concerned, I really love the patches. If it’s all about FM synthesis vibe, maybe you could love the thing...

the only list you seem to have provided is of some of the "crap" ones. were you not serious about your master list? I am shocked, shocked to discover this has happened.

but it is fun making your own presets though. i do it all the time. when working on a project and i need a specific sound i make it myself. scrolling through presets is tedious and boring anyway.BenfordLaw wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 5:00 pmLOL. I was going to put something in my original post about not wanting to make my own presets, because strangely enough, I actually spend time making music, most people don't have the time to make new presets, which is why we are grateful to those of you who do make them.gentleclockdivider wrote: Wed Nov 17, 2021 1:52 pm Benfordlaw dude is obviously not capable of grasping fm
In every FM/OPS thread he asks for some presets to showcase the power of fm , then he's disillusioned when the 80's stock presets are not up hiss alley ..those were the 80's man , and yes 90% of those are horrible !!
FM is capable of almost everything ,it's the synth for deep basslines , ambient , etc
I assume you're just a young lazy dude that needs instant gratification without even taking the time to learn the theory of FM
Without understanding it's basic concepts you're gonna stay dissapointed , yo need to learn about harmonic overtones and how these are created in fm .
The relation between operators and their ratios, and most imortantly the gain control of the operator's output ( envelope )

Yes, because obviously I have to understand how a sound is made in order for it to sound good to me and other people...
Thanks for the FM synthesis lesson, I wasn't asking for that.

When I had an original DX back in the 80‘s, one interesting observation was, that it takes more time and energy to wade through hundreds of presets than making my own.
If you are a synthesist, forming the sound should be part of your skill set, or you are just a keyboardist. Nothing wrong with sticking to piano…

Gotta say, it's pretty lame that It's 2022 and we're still getting the usual, condescending "roll your own like I do or you're not really <insert cool thing to be>."
I enjoy programming Dexed myself, and I enjoy using presets with it, too. Why people still feel the need shame others for using a synth in a different way than they do is just beyond me. Grow up, guys...
Anyway, a raw DX7 never sounded very good, that's what Benford seems to not understand. Everybody ran it through a Chorus at minimum (frequently a Dimension D, but anything works) and then of course delay, reverb...
Some of the stock Dexed patches, I run them into Quatromod's Dim-D chorus and then Sonsig Rev-A for a deep space verb.... they morph into absolutely stellar, moving, shifting, purely digital synth wondrousness
As for programming, Dexed is easily my fav FM synth, because it's the only one I have that keeps everything on one screen. Even that new Plogue one only shows a single operator's panel at a time, so you have to keep clicking around to change the view / can't see everything at once. Dexed may be a bit ugly, but I adore that all the settings are just right there in front of me. By far the fastest for me to program (I'm also quite fond of Operator in Ableton, but it's too small and again, so much clicking around different tabs....)

Too bad for the OPS7 that its UI is not « everything on a page ». Now discontinued PX7 from Reason Studios was a great example of such a designmholloway wrote: Thu May 05, 2022 5:30 am As for programming, Dexed is easily my fav FM synth, because it's the only one I have that keeps everything on one screen. Even though I much prefer the sound of Dexed to Native Instrument's FM8 (because Dexed is much more raw and intense sounding like the original DX7,) nevertheless, FM8 has a cool "macro" screen that provides just a few controls for altering your sounds. These controls group under the hood FM parameters and make editing an FM patch almost as easy as editing an analog synth.BenfordLaw wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 11:31 am As it is, I am giving up with Dexed and any other DX7 emulations forever, it's a waste of time, there are so few decent sounds it's not worth it.
Of course, you're not going to program that perfect "Tine Piano" sound using these macro controls. But you can create some really gnarly Dub Step patches if that's your thing. Or you can just make some minor tweaks to existing FM8 patches without knowing anything about FM synthesis.
