Really getting back into Tracktion mode...

All the funny buisness aside around here... I just have to say, I can never stay away from T too long. In spite of it not having an update in what feels like forever. In spite of seeing everything else on the planet adapting features that are quite Tracktion'esque... it just doesn't matter. They don't work like Tracktion.

I spent the last few months really *trying* to get into something else. Most of my time was spent between eXT, Live, Podium, and even FruityLoops 5 but don't tell anyone! :hihi:... in an honest attempt to adapt and see if I could grasp them and work in a manner as efficient as Tracktion. Result... not one has convinced me, with all their new fangled bells and whistles, to stray.

While in each of these tools I've been able to construct relatively complete roughed song structures (sans Podium)... I've finally identified the number one problem which stops me from moving onward to completion. None of these programs have any strength in editing (maybe in Podium but I never can get that far)! and the navigation just doesn't lend to really zipping all over the place with speed... this is really where a track comes to life for me. It's like chop-suey! You'd think I was an audio black belt. I stack audio up and break it with my head, foot, hands, what ever it takes. If you are a control freak, and like to place everything by hand... other software becomes a lot less attractive.

I did give Sonar a good go as well, but the bloat factor just makes me want to puke. You right click a menu and a shitload of stuff comes up that I don't even want to think about. You can probably configure it off, but figuring out how to do that is a mission in itself. It just feels way to cluttered.. then I get flush and dizzy. I get lost in it's sea of options at which point I just removed the demo (agian.. this is the third time).

anyway... every once in a while, I have a "T" epiphany... why am I drawn to this fugker like a magnet? just thought I share it (again...) I'm sure everyone has their own moment of "understanding" ... heheheh :D meanwhile others just move on to something that ultimately works better for them... but I think they must be a bit touched in the noodles :nutter: (j/k) hehe.

Amen my brotha. Nothing is as easy to use or un-bloated as Tracktion 1. The workflow is incredible to me. Even with its missing features I still enjoy using it everyday. Its infectious. I find myself using all the Tracktion keyboard shortcuts in other apps. I tryed to use F5/F8 to zoom full in Flash a couple of minutes ago :hihi:. And the stability has never let me down in over a year of use, I've had zero crashes. It still amazes me, when I used to use Cubase I felt like I was working on a ticking timebomb waiting to destroy my project. No thanks.

T1 4 ever. (until T2).

ModuLR, you hit the nail on the head for me. It's about precise placement of Audio, and zipping around. I'm not an audio black belt, but I'm at least a blue belt. Even MIDI tracks-- sometimes I'm not thrilled or comfortable editing the MIDI, so I just render to audio and work from there.

actually that was a bit of an embelishment... I'm more like the uncoordinated kid that cracks the instructor in the nuts. :hihi:

i'm an audio ninja!

unless i go to another program. then i'm just the belt that came with my dressing gown (it is black, but i'm sure it's not really valid)

tracktion is going to stay with me forever. it is my most treasured tool. reaktor comes a close second, but i wouldn't be happy without my tracktion.
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

I'm the old dude who can't even do a roundhouse kick above his waistline because his hips are too stiff, but they give him a blue belt anyways, because at least he's trying. ;)

Valley, next time you want to try something else, you really have to try Vegas. No, it won't do midi or load VSTI's, that's why I got T (I can't wait for T2, I need better more complete midi tools), but for just plain audio work it's incredibly fast, flexible and intuitive. And the timestretch/pitchshifting is really good, as opposed to another app I won't name. I use a mixture of Vegas and Tracktion all the time.

Ha ha so true , I was once a limber young orange belt who chuckled at the site of that  ,

I'm a hundred percent for Vegas too. It is so quick easy and effective... but no midi, no VST... in fact, it is no sequencer.
But to match video & audio, it's the best for me. So is T2 going to blow vegas away... or not ? I wish !

OK guys. I'm a fairly seasoned cubase sx user (v.2.2 - no direct need to rush out and upgrade to v.3). I got hold of the free version of tracktion recently but as of yet have not looked at it, mainly 'cos I'm used to my way of working with cubase and haven't currently got the inclination to learn new methods.

However, can anyone give a quick list of benefits in comparison to cubase? For instance, people keep saying that the workflow is more efficient but no-one (that I've seen) has explained how.

Anyone?
Mine's a Stella. Cheers !

don't know much about cubase but I know that coming from acid one of the things that i really liked was that your whole mix is right there. in acid, to add effects you had to click the track's fx button, then go to add, then look for you plugin. in tracktion all you have to do is drag a filter where you want it to go and select the VST/VSTi that you want.

Yep, I moved to Tracktion from Cubase SX1. Some of the finer points of SX are missing from Tracktion, so it depends a bit on what tools you need. Having said that I have Sibelius for notation and Audition for audio editing, for example.

Tracktion is a better sequencer than Cubase for me because -
* your whole working environment is visible in one window
* you can see the input, contents, level, volume fader, automation, effects and instrument plugins for each track in one straight line. I don;t think you can possibly get more intuitive than that.
* it seems MUCH more stable than Cubase, which I had problems with
* Much better Freeze function than in SX2.2

Try it out and let us know what you think!
