PSS-480 uses something different I think. I forget what part number exactly, but it is operator type-U (OPU) as opposed to the YMF262's OPL3. OPU is very similar to OPL2 except it has the same envelopes as higher end FM chips (AR, D1R, SL, D2R, RR) and the ability to fine tune the two operators. As far as I know, there aren't any VSTs that properly emulate that chip unfortunately.silverpants wrote: Sun Jun 05, 2022 11:53 am My first every synth was the little Yamaha PSS-480 from 1987 (I was 11). Ah yes. I have since discovered that my synth used the YM3812. And this must be a predecessor to the YMF262, since the Wikipedia page says "The YMF262 improved upon the feature-set of the YM3812"zerofox97 wrote: Sun Jun 05, 2022 7:17 pmPSS-480 uses something different I think. Nice, I like the intro and outro reminded me of PS1-era JRPGs.glenzo wrote: Sun Jun 05, 2022 4:36 pm Here is my submission:

After downloading the plugin to my Mac, Logic would not validate it and Digital Performer crashed anytime I enabled a second instance of it. Reaper seemed to work fine, but I hadn't used it that much in the past. To compose the track, I used Logic and a "similar FM plugin" as a scratchpad, then transferred the MIDI to Reaper. Once it was in Reaper, I changed all of the sounds to the ADLMIDI, and used the DAW for mixing and mastering.
There are 16 instances of the plug-in in use. Reaper's native EQ (Mostly HPF and LPF) and Compression were used on each track, along with some instances of Vahalla's SuperMassive for effects, and some OTT on the bass to smooth it out. For the mastering bus, I used OTT and W1.
I hope you enjoy the track, and good luck to all participants!

You can't use both; only either.ELEX wrote: Sun Jun 05, 2022 12:57 pmOne thing's for sure, the same FM settings sound very different between both plugins. The level sliders seem to scale differently ( some sort of lin/log thing ? ) ADL is much easier to work with in this regard, imo. After a bit of fiddling it's possible to get them to sound quite similar, though. Providing one uses only the sine wave on ADL, of course. I'm having a hard time deciding which one to use, tbh. And feeling a little miffed about the lack of (hard) panning options, which the emulated chips absolutely offered. Any one instance efforts will have to be strictly mono.liqih wrote: Sun Jun 05, 2022 11:45 am BTW does anyone find any relevant sound difference between ADLplug and OPNplug? I'm almost deaf but I should still hear that, LOL

But I am allowed to check them both out, I believe.

Here is my submission for this month. Made in Reaper with 16 instances of ADL_MIDI, Reaper's EQ and compressor plus OTT for the drums. Reaper's limiter helped to make the final -14 LUFS-I for Soundcloud.
I have put a lot of melodies into this to compensate the simple sound design.
To be honest: When I started to make music as a kid there were these Yamaha keyboards with FM technology and I did not like them. I bought a Kawai device with PCM technology instead. That produced a way more realistic sound.
But now I finally made my FM doodle music because of the OSC. Thanks for this! My life is a bit more complete now
I am looking forward to your songs.

In OPN there's a couple of greyed-out preset banks (see screenshot) with names like "elctrkit" and "analgkit" — does anyone know if it's possible to access these?

These can be accessed via midi chanel 10 (percussion)zachy9 wrote: Wed Jun 08, 2022 7:33 am In OPN there's a couple of greyed-out preset banks (see screenshot) with names like "elctrkit" and "analgkit" — does anyone know if it's possible to access these?
Where it says 'part' use the plus arrow to reach 10 to see these banks and parameters and make sure your midi input is channel 10 to hear.

Is anyone else having this issue where sometimes adlmidi suddenly starts making the wrong sounds? As in, no settings changed, it just starts outputting a completely different sound, and when you load a new instrument, the sound it makes is also completely different from what it is supposed to be?

EDIT: You can ignore this message.
Regarding the channel 10 percussion thing, in ADL I don't see a similar set of "kit" banks as the image. Does ADL allow saving of a percussion set like OPN?

Okay I swear I have tried really hard to figure this out.
How can I create an entirely new bank? I just want a completely blank bank I can fill with my own instruments including percussion in "part 10" whatever that means. (Does "part" basically mean "channel"?)
