Thoughts on the FM module [MSF]

There is unfortunately (and understandably) not so much love for this complex beast of an fm synth. I'm exploring it a bit right now and should share some presets I think. I also wonder if there is a possibility of making an importer/converter from all the presets that exists out there as original sysx and Dexed presets? It would raise the usability of this thingie a thousandfold. I once owned a DX7 and miss some sounds, that I'd like to access under the MSF hood. Dexed never grew on me.

It's even scarier to program than the DX7.

Checkout Arturia's DX7 V. It's amazing and much more than a simple emulation. And it loads the original soundbanks.

Could not agree more, I really wished the MSF FM had some proper presets. I think there are some fundamental design details about it that make it unable to perform what FM8 does, perhaps the same for DX. When I have asked about presets it has not really gone anywhere...in any case +1!!!

I wonder what you miss from FM8 ?magmagwa wrote: Wed Jul 06, 2022 5:54 pm Could not agree more, I really wished the MSF FM had some proper presets. There's the preset morphing (but i did found a way to do it using multiparameter in bank mode. It was painfull to do but It works nicely !)

Good question. The main difference I see, is that FM8 has only 6 normal OPs, similar to those in MSF, but then it has those two additional modules Saturator and Filter, which are part of the matrix. And you can also route single OPs outside the matrix. This gives some other dimension. The MSF module has this additional Feedback option, which you won't find in the FM8 I believe.
Lmao. It has all on one page, so it looks chaotic at first sight. But you will get used to
Have you noticed the presets within the operator section? There are some DX7 recreations already in place. Some good presets are also in the OP section.magmagwa wrote: Wed Jul 06, 2022 5:54 pm Could not agree more, I really wished the MSF FM had some proper presets.
PS. And do not forget the FM / DX instruments, which are included in MSF. Some Chandler & Jason masterpieces there
Last chance

It's that the generic Melda interface isn't optimized to guide the eyes visually on such a busy page, so it's easy to get lost each time I apply a new modulator. I'm wasting precious energy just concentrating hard on this step alone.Tyrs wrote: Wed Jul 06, 2022 7:17 pmLmao. It has all on one page, so it looks chaotic at first sight. But you will get used to
I also wonder if it's really possible to recreate every DX7 algorithm in this matrix. I'm not used to it yet.

I'm sure it is. If I had too much money, then maybe. Thanks for the tips!Held wrote: Wed Jul 06, 2022 5:38 pm Checkout Arturia's DX7 V. It's amazing and much more than a simple emulation. And it loads the original soundbanks.
