That's a forelast generation mid tier desktop CPU you are comparing to the current highest end of laptop CPU's.

The fact that it doesn't perform much worse proves what I wrote.

Let's put it like this: Laptops are yester-yester-yesteryears premium desktops. ;) There's a lot between them.

That's unfortunately what the Mac guys don't get. Their M1 doesn't stand a chance against high end desktop CPU's. Obviously. But, "obvious" doesn't seem to be the Apple fans' forte.

Captain Obvious isn't a Mac user, that's for sure.
Thanks I think that's what I'll do(:

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think there's still a big difference between the M1 and the mobile i9, right? I mean the big advantage of the M1 is the power efficiency, but performance wise it doesn't come close

Yes, the power efficiency will be a lot better, as the CPU is ARM based. Performance wise, I'm sure the Intel will do better. Dunno though. Hard to compare when they don't run the same OS.

Thanks guys for all of your help!

thats fair, i always thought the i5 x600k series to be a gamers wet budget dream, and whatever works in gaming certainly works for production, even using dozens of tracks at 192k.
so really i think we say the same thing but from different perspectives.
either way the 12900hx will make anyone happy for a very long time!

Yeah, I think so too. :)

"the Mac guys"? M1 is 2 years old tech. Obviously, recent tech is prone to be faster.

the PC guy(s) in this case doesn't seem to grasp that Apple Silicon is actually high end, just for the mobile / laptop sector.

Try putting this 12900 into an iPad competitor, or an ultrabook and see how it will fare.
And i don't mean just performance wise, which surely will suck too as it will have to throttle like mad, but also battery life and noise floor because of the fan(s) and bulkiness, as it will also need a much bigger battery and more room for cooling in order to be not completely useless.

I'm sure this is going to be a hit and Apple is already shivering
The GAS is always greener on the other side!

I read in black and white here and elsewhere that some people think that the M1 was the fastest CPU ever.

Anyway, not relevant to this thread or the OP's decision.

It was. At the day it was released and for some months after that.
If raw speed is concerned, it was overtaken. performance per wattage, though.... nah. still on top. way on top

indeed. It was you, though, who pulled the Apple card.

Yeah, I did. Was obvious because of the discussion about mobile and desktop CPU's.
