MSoundFactory Essentials install issues (with great power comes great confusion)

I just acquired MSoundFactoryLE in the 50% sale. Yay!

Issues:

It's always been unclear to me (and to the friends I've turned on to MSoundFactory Player) just what is needed and how to install it. At first I thought that all I needed to do was check the option to install the MSoundFactory Instruments in the Meldaproduction universal installer.

This resulted in Super Saw working, but sounding....uninspiring doesn't come close. 😂 It appeared to work, though, it just sounded like....yikes.

Then I clicked on "Install factory data" and saw all these things that said they were free but that I hadn't installed. This dialog was confusing because:

1. I thought I had already installed the Essentials instruments.
2. I was surprised to see that I could apparently get gobs of MDrummer stuff for free if I hit the "Install all" button.

To my current understanding, the first item was true, but I still needed to install the sample data. It wasn't clear that instruments and their sample data are two separate downloads that must both be installed, even if all you want is Super Saw (which in its properly installed form is worth the trouble). Also, the fact that the instruments do make sound, but terrible thin sound, is confusing (and not all of them pop the error message about missing samples). At first I thought I might have peed away $49. I had once correctly installed Super Saw on my old system and had remembered it as being EPIC.

As for the second item....well, I think that the MDrummer sample content doesn't apply to me as an MSoundFactoryLE ROMplermeister because there are probably no instruments that use it. If I had the full version, maybe I could use the samples to make my own drum kits, but I don't. I know there's a check box at the top where I can select to filter to MSoundFactory or MDrummer content, but why is that content even there when I wouldn't be able to use it in my product? Couldn't the MDrummer content be greyed out for LE users?

Lastly, the default value for the download and install progress bar seems to be "0%" even after everything is installed and happy. That (along with the pink "Install factory data" button, and the "Install all" button) makes it seem as if there is still something that hasn't been finished in the process.

I figured it all out, but it took me a long time. Also, when I helped a (computer-savvy) friend install Monastery Grand on his system, we both wound up baffled for a while. I'm a former IT guy, software QA engineer, etc., and at least aspire to be a steely-eyed Melda-man, so I knew that with persistence, it could be sorted out, but I wonder how many people are going to give up and/or end up with 80GB of unneeded drum samples in their download folder?

It's probably spelled out somewhere on the website, but couldn't it be spelled out better in the plug-in's or installer's dialogs? "If you wish to use MSoundFactory Player with the included Super Saw instrument, you must download and the MFactory Essentials data (else it will sound like a broken weed whacker)" or something.

Other than that, now that I have the instruments AND the samples installed, the included instruments sound frickin' amazing.

Okay, replying to my own post here, but same topic.

Figured I would give Dream Machines a try. Only 90MB, nice. No "Download & Install" button in the UI, but fine, click on it and go to a page with the full instructions on how to download it.

Melda installer, cool, done that already, MSoundFactory Essentials, yep, done that already, so let's download Dream Machines manually from the website. Done, and then "Install manually downloaded products." Browse to my downloads folder, click on DreamMachines.mproduct, it says it's installing, all looks good.

Except it's not visible in the Instruments browser. Under Drums?....no....under Percussive?...no...open the Presets browser, under Drums?...nope....under Percussive?....no again. Let's use the search function in the Instrument browser....Dream Machines....nada.

Exit the DAW completely, restart, go through the dance again....no Dream Machines.

At this point, I'm giving up until I hear from the forum how to install this instrument. Yes, of course I'm missing a step. Yes, I failed to notice something somewhere.

Is it like Myst, where you go around collecting information from multiple different locations and then finally put it all together and progress to the next level? If so, does anyone have a hint guide?

I know I said I was going to give up until I got some assistance, but what the heck, the adventure continues.

After taking care of some household chores, I decided to fire up the DAW again to run through the presets on MSFLE. And what to my wondering eyes should appear in the Instrument browser? You got it, Dream Machines, where it had not been before. Just to confirm, I put it in the search in the Instrument browser and it found it right away. So apparently....something happened while I was doing dishes.

Click on it, oops we're not out of the woods yet, I get the UI with a dialog saying that it could not find the following resources, and listing about 30 .WAV files that are supposed to be deep in my ProgramData folder.

Except that MSoundFactory's "MDrummer Factory Path" is "C:/MDrummer" (has Meldaproduction always used forward slashes in Windows, or am I just noticing it?). How to fix this? I want my sample data on my 1TB D: drive, which is an SSD. MSoundFactory is of two minds. In the data install dialog, the path to this data is clearly C:\MDrummer, and the samples are in there. The dialog is also asking me if I want to find them, which I could do, but I don't even want them where they currently are.

Strategy: exit DAW again, move MDrummer samples to D: drive, then open MSFLE again, click on Dream Machines and then use the find dialog. If Dream Machines isn't listed, exit, put some dishes in the dishwasher, and try again. It seemed to help last time.

Aaand....hey-o, that works....sort of. When it asked for the samples, I browsed to the new sample folder on the D: drive and the default drum machine sounds loaded and I can tap on the 6 pads and get a cool DMX-like sound. Nice. Go into the Download & Install dialog, give it the new location, aaaand.....

Uh oh. I switched to another instrument, then back to Dream Machines and it's asking for the samples' location again. It apparently doesn't remember where the samples were found. And trying to load other Instrument presets results in Dream Machines going silent. Hmm, I think I'll go put something in the dishwasher. That seemed to help earlier.

Dishwasher's still on dry cycle, so I had to settle for setting a glass in the sink and crossing my fingers.

Awww, noooo. No change in behavior. In order to get sound out of Dream Machines, I have to tell it where to find the samples for whatever preset is selected when the plug-in starts. Then the next time the plug-in starts I have to do that again. The only place I can find to set a global location for MDrummer samples is the Download & Install dialog, and that has no effect on behavior.

Okay, tapping out again. If I manage to figure out a more permanent solution, YOU will be the FIRST to know.

I have identical problem.

I found a temporary workaround. I say "temporary" because I eventually want to move all of my MSoundFactory sample data to my D: drive.

The issue is that MSF isn't paying attention to where the MDrummer content actually is. It keeps looking for it in ProgramData. Solution: copy your MDrummer folder to where MSF thinks it should be. You can find that out by examining the path in the error messages. Since the error message goes away eventually, take a screenshot of it.

My MDrummer content was in C:\MDrummer, YMMV.

Once I did this, Dream Machines worked just fine.

Hey, I will mention a few things in the hope that they will help.

The instrument "Super-saw" does not use any samples. It should work perfectly without installing or downloading anything additional to the installer. Not sure why it sounded different, possibly something to do with MPE? I couldn't say without some more information to test.

Some of the instruments in MSoundFactoryLE use MDrummer samples. From the top of my head, I think "Deep Impact" and "Cinematic Braams" and probably others too. Both the "Essentials" packs should be installed for all the instruments to work.

Dream Machines is available to download and install everything it needs from within the plugin. It is there is the "Download & install instruments" window.

You must first set the path you wish the samples to be installed. Do this in the "Download & install instruments" window using the "MDrummer factory path" option.

In your case, I would recommend starting it all again. Delete the samples folder that was created. Then set the sample folder your wish to use and download and install the product again using the "Download & install instruments" window. It should all work fine after that.

Thank you for the feedback, we will see if there are any improvements we can make to simplify the process.
