Any of those is a great improvement but I prefer the simplicity of 2. 1 is next favorite. Nice work!

The only issue I can see with 2 & 3 from a user POV is that it might be mistaken for being something to do with MIDI:

I actually had the same concern that's why i added the brush initially but the icon is so small it just looks like strikethrough MIDI then

then i colored the palette colors, but then it's colored again

The colors are a lot more subdued on these though, which may be enough. Just go with your gut as to whichever you prefer (including the original). You're able to see it in full context.

otoh i just might go with the paint roller. i think it fits better visually into a fairly desaturated top panel

paintroller it is. i think it blends in the best.

while i was at it, i tweaked the main meters a little. to make it more obvious where you're at with just a glympse
