Kontakt does wavetables now. Look at HOSS Audio Klassik 106, it's basically a VA with wavetable oscillators, fully editable:

Very interesting choice. I’m going to have to revisit it . I own it and wasn’t impressed enough to dig into it. I’ve made this error in judgement before. You have me wondering what I am missing.

That is somewhat true. I have some of Homegrown Sounds instruments. They are pretty good. However, Kontakt is not a comprehensive synth implementation like Falcon or MSoundFactory are.

Just the one synth? Falcon. No contest. But I'd miss some of the specialisations that others do, for sure.

Not at all, for the simple reason you can choose anything as a sound source, so you never have to make anything from scratch. e.g. If you want some string sounds, load up a string library. If you want basslines, load up a bass library. From there you can tweak it just like any synth. Presence XT, for example, has two LFO, two envelopes, 9 different filter types (with Drive and Punch controls), as well a 16 slot mod matrix that includes Aftertouch, Breath Controller and Expression as sources. And a s ample-based synth like Hexeract even does FM with samples. I mean, you'd hardly say a Korg Triton can't do anything you can think of and it's just a sampler.
NOVAkILL : Legion GO, AMD Z1x, 16GB RAM, Win11 | Audient EVO 8 | Lumi Keys | Studio Pro 8
Korg Odyssey, bx-oberhausen, Proxima, PolyMax, GR8, JP6K, Union, Atomika,
Invader 2, Flow Motion, Olga, TRK 01, Thorn, Spire, VG Iron

Samplers/ROMplers certainly have their place and I use them all the time. They excel at traditional sounds, pads, bass sounds, pianos, guitars, etc. But you can't get the range of sounds that you can with a synth, and certainly not as quickly, especially if you are trying to create something that is totally unique.

not a clue sorry.

Wouldn’t want to have just one synth, but if that was the alternate reality I found myself in.. probably VCV Rack. Or Reaktor. Something modular or similar.

i am thinking.... massive X. i love the sound and the capabilities of this plugin, but have not yet mastered it. so, in between playing with it, i could spend time learning my way around it.

One overall - Halion. Not sure if that'd be rated as a synth or a development platform though.

One synth for programming fun - Arturia Matrix 12V

One synth for sound quality - GForce OB-e
