it will at the cost of CPU and disk performance but with modern day CPU power, I don't see the downside of it. modern CPU and SSD has a lot power overhead for processing audio.
Yeah but Read/Write even of SSDs is not unlimited and constant writing, several hours per day would wear them faster.
That's true but my first ever SSD, Intel 320 128GB that I bought in 2011 that runs as WindowsOS drive, till this day it's still working... I have A LOT of SSDs, currently a few 1 - 2TBs internals and a few more external ranging from 512GB - 8TB.

None of them died yet. I think in real life, SSD write life written on spec are very conservative, unless you use them in datacenter otherwise I think it would be a tall order to write your SSD to death.

At the same time, there are plenty of people who are very unlucky with their SSDs (I'm not one of them), so it's different from case to case.
I personally hate when a computer is doing something in the background that I don't need, so I would disable this function in DAW immediately. I hate to waste resources.

I'm fine with having this option as long as it's possible to turn it off.

Logic has that for MIDI and i love it.
I wish it had it for audio.

That's what Retrospective Recording is for, and DAWs are now implementing it for Audio, as well.

The big issue is figuring out how big of a buffer to maintain. If it's too big than you end up having to do too many editing operations every time you Retrospectively Record anything.

If I said you are blocked, I won't see your posts. Please kindly refrain from quoting or replying to me.
"Notifications for Nothing" are annoying. Blocking me in return is a good way to avoid this.

Ableton has this when needing to capture any Midi just played even if you didnt record it. Not audio though.

Hmmm, did retrospective recording ever come to Bitwig?

That’s silly… Bitwig must be the only DAW not to implement it. Also wish they’d hurry up and add ARA2…

Feel free to sift through every single recorded note/track. My life is better off with a record button.

Most of the shite I play while trying to come up with riffs simply isn't worth recording IMO. I mean, I'm pleased my DAW gives me the option of retrospectively retaining all this shite, but I really don't need an extra drive to function as a giant septic tank for my noodlings. Doing the same for audio seems...like an even bigger septic tank, a mammoth reservoir of musical waste. :scared:

This is why it should also upload online in real time to all platforms. As a backup you know ;)
Because we're not producing enough of digital (and energy) waste per every minute :D

Tracktion has had MIDI retrospective recording for going on 8 years, and audio retrospective recording for... going on 6, I think. I'd thought it was standard in DAWs, but was just spoiled.

Of course you can enable/disable it.

Surveillance DAWs.

Nah, I turn this off if given a chance.

Don’t f**king record my shit unless I specifically ask you to. Thanks.

Interesting, DP11 has this for audio and MIDI, I just assumed it was common. The minor caveat is it works only on record enabled tracks, not input enabled tracks.
