cool! please keep us posted as to your experience.
Ok first impressions. :)

I normally don't care for product managers since there are just so many of them but the ReFx Cloud app made installing the plugin and the 18 preset banks a breeze. One click, wait a minute and done.

Just make sure you set any custom paths in the cloud app (using the gear icon) before installing or it will pick defaults. The installer did not read the VST plugin location in the registry (Win 10).

As to the sound of the synth itself it's as aggressive as I remember V1 being. Like I said earlier it's not going to make any type of sound you haven't heard somewhere before in other synths but it does have its own unique character and that's very important to anyone with a folder full of other synths. I would liken its core sound more to Spire than say Hive 2.

But as with any synth that has a well defined character there are going to be those who like that character and those who do not.

So in this case I really have to recommend trying the demo (if there is one at some point) before deciding to purchase, especially if one has never heard Vanguard 1.

I like V2's character but it will be a say top 20 synth in my folder rather than a top 5. It will certainly get some work if I need a sound with that particular flavor.

Programming patches is easy but somewhat limited. I don't like the gui color since I'm not a fan of green but the overall gui is adequate. Easy to read, easy to navigate, and fully resizable. Someone said it can be skinned but I haven't been able to find a skin folder yet.

Even if it's a new purchase at $79 (they do charge tax), when you consider it comes with 2400 presets and buying that many presets would certainly cost you near that I think it's a good deal. If you really like the sound then it becomes a great deal. Those who own V1 and haven't had it installed since 32 bit went out of fashion will get a nice shot of nostalgia.

But again it comes down to whether an individual likes the core sound of Vanguard or not. Hopefully they'll drop a demo version soon so everyone can decide for themselves. :tu:

The core sound is the one reason I (and presumably many other v1 owners) am so excited for v2. It has that very distinct fizzy and sorta grimey sound. I plan on upgrading in the next day or so. As for the GUI, it’s alright with me, but I’m looking forward to seeing some custom skins.

?
It's about the same price at JRR using GROUP code. GX-80 looks more interesting to me than VANGUARD2. $49 for VANGUARD2 or $49 for GX-80.

Thanks for the review, Teksonik. :)

After the spontaneous update purchase, mhmmmm I don't really know, mixed feelings...
Somewhere fair in price, at least compared to the V1 version, modern, GUI, browser etc ... and of course all Vanguard sound banks.

Even if Vanguard sounds very digital and felt "retro" from a VST point of view due to its DNA - because it's just modernized in the basic structure instead of massive sound updates - I don't know. Very light on a CPU basis - but just in terms of sound - if you have the choice between wavetable monsters like Hive, Serum and especially Pigments - I think Vanguard will be only something for refx fans or nostalgics.

At the same time, one has to say that it is somehow understandable that Refx with Vanguard V2 is not releasing a completely new synthesizer that can compete with the top dogs ala Pigments & Co.

It kind of confuses me as a synth - the sound of the Vanguard compared to Pigments, Hive etc - feels weird, this big contrast in the current times. A synth from 2005 lands back in 2022... hmmm

they do not offer crossgrade discount if you have nexus, so £80 is bit overpriced i think for nostalgic vst, think i will wait for better deal at some point

i haven't really spent time with it yet (maybe tomorrow), but that's sort-of the point for me; i have enough 'modern' synths, and this seems like a change of pace. anyway, for me, the real test will be if it inspires me to make music, or just distracts me for a few hours...

Someone mentioned how Mike Kleps of REFX reacted badly over user requests, but is much nicer now?

Back in the Vanguard days, trolls were still new and real world forum behaviour was little understood, some folk bullied Mike and he didn't know how to handle it then.

Few of us did. It was all new and to be learned. Can still be difficult.

Mike was the first example of a dev who didn't take it on the chin as he thought people's offensive behaviours were illogical.

So he quit KVR and got on with making a success outside, while over here in JVR the witch hunt that it became was over, and he got mostly forgotten.

Or this is how I recall it.

He made a beginners mistake any of us might.

I've seen many posters make a daft mistake and get torn apart for it, then subsequently leave KVR because people were so mean.

Who's not seen it?

Not everyone who disagrees is a troll. Not all devs behave perfectly either. He didn’t get forgotten. Who says he’s either nicer now, or wasn’t nice before

So many assumptions.

It's the manner of disagreeing that defines it.

A disagreement can be interesting, until it gets mean, then it's just hurt, which is the troll's goal. To see someone hurt.

btw a poster earlier on in the thread said Mike Kleps recent support was first rate.

So about the backwards compatibility....Does that mean when I load an old FLStudio track that used vanguard, but I no longer have vanguard1 on my system, that vanguard2 will load instead of v1 in that track, or will the track load but without vanguard and then you have to manually insert it on that channel?

V2 should automatically replace V1 and it should 'just work'. There was a bug in the AU version, have an update coming for that soon. VST should be working. The issue is V1 was very old and didn't actually save the plugin state. Instead the DAW just saved all the parameter values, then on load, reset all parameter values. I try and detect all the parameters being set and then detect that as a preset load, then patch the internal state from V1 to V2. However, this might not work in some DAWs if they don't set all the parameters in order or do other weird things I didn't think of.

If you still have V1 running, might be safer to save presets, then upgrade to V2 then load the presets. If not, and you run into issues loading old projects, open a ticket and I'll try and dig into it.

Though I am no longer a refx user, I must say FigBug, your presence on kvr does wonders for the brand.
Keep doing what you doing.
