We didn't even have audio it the years it was called FruityLoops.

FL was created to make loops (first even midi only) not to use them.

Surely the music-making humans have been responsible for the hits so far, not the app, as such?

There's no automatic hitmaking functionality yet in FL Studio. Although, if it ever gets to that point, adding "IL gets x% of royalties" to the EULA would make things interesting on a whole another level.

That's reserved for future expansion. Right now, a "Belt and Road Compressor" might net a few extra bamboo leaves from the party officials.

So we’re back to the issue really being that eventually they stopped being your personal backup service?

If you had kept your own backups, would you still not be able to use it?
I have my original CD and unlock code. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work anymore using apps with bridging such as Reaper and FLS. I also have CDs of every piece of music (and other) software I bought going back to the early 90s.

If comparing Fruity Loops against Fruity Loops, It is clear that Fruity Loops is the superior choice. That's because there is more Fruity deliciousness in the Fruity Loops than there is in Fruity Loops.

That Amazon one-click buying option is dangerous.
I started on Logic 5 with a PowerBook G4 550Mhz. I now have a MacBook Air M1 and it's ~165x faster! So, why is my music not proportionally better? :(

Of course but a lot of our Power Users have told us that it was the ease of use and the fact that it made noise, out of the box, convinced them they could actually make music. Something that was impossible in classic, linear DAWs that expected you to just record and edit that recording.

When we started we were made fun of because FL contained (admittingly low quality due to the filesize) samples and demo songs as that was absolutely not done at the time.

The same thing for our dark look in times when Logic and Cubase looked like a spreadsheet.

Just check out a typical DAW now ...

There it is. My own guess is most of the perplexed and disbelieving people on KVR are over 50. As am I, but at least I know I’m old and out of touch.

Why people went for the subscription model is simply greed. Plain and simple. Massive profits to be made if you manage to "lock-in" people into a system. Just look at Apple. That's their main business model.
There's no subscription for Logic Pro.
... and no paid for upgrades for 10 (?) years...
I don't think Logic Pro is seen by Apple to be a huge money maker. It's just "added value" to the Mac (and boy is it amazing value!! One of the best "bang for your buck" DAWs out there today, with absolutely amazing internal effects and synthesizers!).

You can bet on this. Old grumpy men who whine because the (music-) world now belongs to other, younger, fresher people. All these youngsters do not play according to our rules and we are pi$$ed.

More than a decade ago some sales figures of FL Studio were leaked or casually mentioned on various forums (don't remember the exact details, sorry!) and I was shocked at just how many copies were sold. Then again, I shouldn't have been as a lot of people around me and a bunch of my friends have all been using FL studio since it's early versions.

It's still one of the most commonly asked about software among my students as well. Has been forever. Now I can finally start recommending it wholeheartedly for them even for basic recording tasks as they _finally_ added proper audio editing in the timeline. Proper fades and cross fades! It only took 20 years! :hihi:
