Still has a number of issues, but the new browser is gonna end up being a solid improvement over the old one.

Seriously though, it's probably overwhelming. They are volunteers I'd guess, and that would mean they would have to delete most of KVR. You must dig for the gold.

Along with version 5 I'm certainly looking forward to learn from the flurry of tutorials using MSEGs that will appear from all the people requesting this feature since ages, showing how wonderful things can be done with them. It should be no less than a storm of tutorials.

So It's only fair to come back and say that I've warmed up on Bitwig 5 a bit since the announcement (and it turns out my upgrade subscription is still active anyway... so I guess I wasn't skipping it after all).EmmetPDX wrote: Tue Apr 11, 2023 10:35 pm Meh... I'm pretty underwhelmed. I think I'll be skipping this one.
I know MSEG is something that people have been clamouring for (for like a decade plus) so I'm happy for the people who finally got it, but I don't really see right now how it fits into what I want to do. I wanted to give it a fair shake so I've watched a couple demos of people playing around with it, but I'm not really sold on it yet.
Project and track level macros/modulators are definitely nice to have, but I don't see them changing things meaningfully enough for me personally. The new browser looks... fine... but I'm not keen on shelling out the price of an upgrade plan for that.
Every improvement that I've heard about seems to make sense and I can see how some of these things might make sense for people in certain settings and genres. (Maybe MSEG is a killer feature for people who are really into dubstep. I dunno. Live your best life.) But as someone who mainly does audio/midi recording, plus some sound design to get the synths and effects that I want, nothing about this update really jumps out to me right now.
It's probably just not for me, and that's fine.
I watched a few more people playing with it, including the Polarity video showing off a few interesting tricks as well as the Bitwig official demo showing off some of the new clip launcher features. I'm still not sure if it would have been significant enough for me to go ahead and renew my subscription, but I can certainly see some of the potential of the things that they've added.
I think one of the best things about the modular design of Bitwig is that sometimes simple things can interact in really interesting and complex ways, and I certainly underestimated the combinatorial usefulness of stuff like MSEG. I see now that there's a lot more to it than wubba wub sounds.

bitwig 5 is completely mindblowing awesome with the new features, but its pretty unstable for me after working all day on a track using it. crashing, losing settings on reloading. i finally just threw up my hands (luckily right at the end of the day), exported really fast and went back to 4 to do mastering.
obviously its a beta so its not supposed to work and they put warnings in, just saying that those warnings are there for a reason. it really is a beta, seems a lot more so than other times theyve done this from my experience due to more significant changes.
that said, for me it's the global modulation... this is completely changing how you can produce. theres a bit of work setting it up every time, but once you do, you can stop thinking about it and just throw different things at it, and duplicate tracks, modify, etc.
what i love about bitwig, is when you're really in a creative flow, and you're in tune with Bitwig and just dialed in, you can pretty much just do anything your imagination comes up with and it can lead to crazy places. becoming a "bitwig samurai" pays dividends if you are interested in more experimental electronic music. its completely different from any other daws, more of a modular compositional environment or something.
as for the browser:
honestly, a lot of people were raving about it on Youtube so I was expecting to love it. not saying its bad or anything, but i did initially get annoyed because i'm so used to the old one. i don't really think that necessarily speaks to whether the new one is bad or good. it does seem like its an improvement visually.

I think the new browser is great... just it's buggy at the moment so that causes the initial experience to be frustrating.mxbf wrote: Fri Apr 14, 2023 9:40 pm

Once it is sorted out, it is going to be overall significantly better than the old one.

In regards to the browser, I love it but asked support to include a Collections icon in the quick source.
I don’t mean a single collection, but a spot for all of them instead of clicking the four dots>Collections>specific collection…. Then exit to start from the top all over if want to switch collections .
Please correct me if there is something I’m missing though . What else does the browser need? Thats the big functionality I’m missing from BW4

Sure I’ll buy that for a dollar
MIDI capture/retrospective record are 100% my #1 wishes. Everything else is secondary.Anyway, there are several good things about this release. I think it's particularly great that Bitwig added a usability improvement (browser revision), and made some significant enhancements with the clip launcher for those who like to jam with Bitwig and/or perform live. Now that MSEG has been added with some nice modulation bonuses, perhaps Bitwig can focus on Midi capture and comping, improving the sampler, and piano roll improvements.
Improvements to the piano roll are always welcome.
They did MSEGs in an insanely creative way and improved the performance features. MSEG was the #1 request, so I’m pretty certain MIDI capture at least happens, I hope they also do retrospective record for audio as well. I really like that feature in DP.
The other elephant, I don’t know if it’s in their radar but IMO it fits in with their paradigm, it would be great to have free audio and midi tempos change the conductor or main Bitwig tempo. So music recorded without a click track is possible with the benefits of bars, beats etc.

It has input detection and can record a 30 minute buffer of Midi & audio.

Oh wow? That’s really impressive! At $30 it’s a no brainer if it works like it says it does. Mac only which works for me, hopefully Windows and Linux in the future.Olnium wrote: Sat Apr 15, 2023 2:27 amI saw this recommended by someone on YouTube:machinesworking wrote: Sat Apr 15, 2023 12:17 am

agreed! I love that the browser is arrow key oriented and the least amount of mouse clicks the better!drovers88 wrote: Fri Apr 14, 2023 10:40 pm In regards to the browser, I love it but asked support to include a Collections icon in the quick source.
