Anyway to return MIDI to an audio track like you would an effect plugin?

I believe a submix would be far easier, and lets him use tools he already has. A submix gives him controls over the flute part, the vocal part, and both parts together.

Yeah, but again, you seem to be perceiving it as two separate performances. I'm looking to use a MIDI instrument as you would an effect (if possible).

Whether or not you can get this working accurately enough to sound good........

Add a rack plugin. Add two instances of dodo midi as per the user instructions and place your instrument between them. Wire the input to first dodo midi and also straight through to rack output. Connect up the dodo chain, also to the rack output. You can add volume plugins to each chain for mixing control. Now whatever audio passes through this rack will IN THEORY be a blend of the original audio (your voice) and the instrument following the vocal melody. I say in theory as I find dodo to be a bit hot and miss in its interpretation

The plugin (after checking the quickstart video) looks like EXACTLY what I was looking for.

But...

Got a fatal error when scanning for it in Tracktion.

I was finally able to get Dodo to work! For some reason, it has to be installed directly into the Tracktion plugins folder rather than the common programs folder. But whatever, got it to work. Pretty cool.

But is there any way to divide the signals like you would with an effect (dry/wet)? It perfectly plays the melody of the vocal track as a synth instrument, but you can't discern the vocal at all except from the vocal track.

Open the plugin with 'wrap this plugin in a new rack' . right click on the plugin container in the track to find this option. here you will be able to rewire any way that is possible.

This is, unfortunately, a mechanic I'm very confused by. Is it basically a different way of arranging sends and returns? I've tried tinkering with it before, but it is unclear to me which side does what. It starts out with both sides representing the same track, but I'm not sure which one I should change to the return track, etc.

nvm, think i kinda figured it out with a video on YT. seems access to the wet/dry at the bottom kinda does what I'm thinking.

Do get familiar with racks - great way to do grouped things in a slightly unusual way - like feed 2 synths MIDI input to create a single output, or get around limitations of plugins on a track; or even just swap L/R in a stereo output. Only problem is that it kind of hides what's inside until you open it...
