How is auto-decay different from ducking the reverb tail? Just a fancy name?

No, it´s actually working in a different way: by shortening the decay time, instead of "ducking" the reverb tail. You can determine, how short the decay time will be with the "Target" knob and can adjust the "recovery" time (how fast will it be back to the real decay time) with the "Recovery" knob.
So, it´s definitely a unique approach in getting a cleaner signal in my opinion.

Here is a video where talked about with examples shown. It starts at 5:45

Not here - here it's more like 4x, but only if modulation is enabled, which Sunset doesn't have in the first place. Otherwise it's more like 2x (or even less than that).

But then again UVI Plate is - quite unlike the Sunset - true stereo, which basically kind of explains (most of anyway) the remaining difference. That just goes to show how extremely optimized UVI Plate really is. :tu:
You running UVI in Insane mode? That's the only mode worth comparing because it's the only one that is dense enough to feel like a real plate (in my opinion).

On my Mac M1 and Reaper, the difference in Activity monitor is a factor of 6x.

Yes, of course - the Insane mode is specifically what I was replying to. And that you get somewhat higher numbers on the M1 is no really a surprise, considering it does not support AVX. But like I said: turn modulation to zero and the CPU consumption should be roughly cut in half (at least here that's the case).

29$, nice.

Now get rid of that damn iLok... :tu:

They made iLok optional years ago.

edit: nope, it was only last year.

Post

Hm, seriously I don't get the new process as I haven't used ST for quite a while. There's still a lot talk about iLok. Anyways thanks for the info.

Ilok isn't optional

"We do still include the iLok software in the Soundtoys installer, since Activation Codes still use the iLok software for licensing."

Also you only get one activation if you don't use your ilok account, two with the account.

Ah yes, good point about AVX. Never thought of that.

Yeah, I tried turning off modulation but it doesn't seem to do much of a difference here on this Mac. But yeah, anyhow, I'll still definitely be using UVI Plate as it's just so ridiculously good. It's still the king of "invisible" tiny ambience.

Know of any audio demos of UVI Plate that are definitely using insane mode on vocals? Based on what I found on Youtube I passed on getting for $29 this month but now I'm wondering if I made a mistake. Didn't seem dense enough to me, but maybe they didn't have insane mode on. Thought I'd read that UVI doesn't allow trials because they want people to subscribe instead, but glancing at the UVI Plate product page there actually is a 15 day trial.

Has anyone compared Super-plate with Acustica Silver B and Silver Volume L (with quality set to Perfection)? I'd assume it uses a lot less cpu but IDGAF. OTOH I'd guess Super-plate is better for fine-tuning the decay length, and I'm curious about how well decay ducking actually works vs traditional sidechain compression and how it sounds with infinite reverb (thanks for pointing out that the infinite reverb keeps receiving signal).

Just glanced through the Youtube demos again, looks like they were just going through the presets none of which used insane mode. I'm going to have to demo this myself vs Super-plate and Acustica Silver L....

If Super-plate and IK Sunset Studios were tied I'd lean towards Super-plate for more versatility + I dislike IK and their plugins don't seem to be working properly in Bitwig anyway.

Has anyone else experienced a huge increase in CPU use since the V5.4 upgrade? Most instances have gone from using a few cycles to 35% CPU. It's actually insane and literally no projects that use Soundtoys will play anymore. They just grind to a halt. I've owned Soundtoys for years now. Never an issue until now.

The irony is the new SuperPlate plugin is the only one that's efficient. With identical settings to Little Plate it uses a third of the CPU.

What is going on? I'm bewildered. I'll see how Soundtoys support is, but right now I'm regretting upgrading. :dog:

Sigh. Good job guys, creating issues that didn't exist before.

Edit: An example of the insanity
MicroShift v5.3.8 - 2% CPU
MicroShift v5.4 - 34% CPU

That's 17 times the CPU use. Absolutely nuts. :o
