In the very last hour of their summer sale, I succumbed and updated to version 14 of NI Komplete. Now, I'll have to look around for some interesting hardware to order, to cleanse my palate and "restore balance to The Force".

I've been considering the SOMA Ether for experimental field recordings. Anyone have any experience with the device? What are your opinions about it?

I’ve got one and I believe both vurt and whyterabbyt have theirs.

I like it and it’s very sensitive in a good way. I also have an Lom Elektrosluch mini and I get different sounds from them.

He’s a techno guy, but his videos are pretty good even if you don’t do techno (I’m adding because I only inadvertently make techno once in a great while).

yup, im sure there's a couple of other people mentioned they had one too.

i have to admit to not using it as much as i expected, but that's not the ethers fault, just bad timing, not long after i ended up using the mobility scooter for any longer walks, and the electric motor is a bit boring too record too often, which is all it picks up in motion

i do like to stop the motor in different places and see if i can get something interesting

Ive not got one of those, but do have a few telephone voice coils Ive been using for years and years, the ones that pick up EM, as well as some DIY bits (eg inductors and an adapted guitar pickup ) and yeah, they all have their own 'flavour' really. At some point I'd like to 'clone' the LOM Priezor as well, maybe even the Elektosluch itself (or the City version).

If someone's not done any EM recording, I'd always suggest starting with a telephone coil, they're much cheaper, but they're a nice gateway to the more sophisticated tools like the Ether/Elektrosluch. I keep a small stash by the Eurorack as they plug straight in and you can then do feedback loops of processing the EM of the modular in the modular!

Stepping up my MIDI game a bit with a Univer Inter. It brought back some of some fun things I used to do with CV.OCD when I first started with modular, and also some of the round robin tricks I did with Polyend Medusa. (4 different oscillators that get notes assigned to them or stolen as needed, and some of them modulate each other in a very un-polysynth way...) And no more fighting with calibrating pitch every single time, like I used to trying to send pitch CV through the audio interface.

Also a good deal on a used Seaboard Block + two Lightpads, which should arrive next week. I will finally admit that I'm not 100% happy with the poly AT on the Launchpad Pro mk3, and I'm hoping this is smoother plus offering more expressive control in general. For stuff that doesn't fully support MPE, I'm thinking Bitwig can translate and still give me a couple extra modulation signals. Should be fun!

I made my own magnetic sensors that should provide similar results as an Elektrosluch, but I don't have an Elektrosluch to confirm that with. It's nice to hear confirmation that the SOMA Ether provides access to different sounds. That was something I wanted to make sure of, before I spent the money.

That was a cool video. I like the sounds he was able to capture in the arcade.

I can see where that would be a problem with the scooter. I wonder if it's possible to add shielding or RFI suppression to your mobility scooter and eliminate the problem?

I've already built my own EMF microphones, which I think provide results roughly similar to an Elektrosluch. They're fun to play with, but now I'm ready to expand my palette and capture a wider variety of sounds.
